    Yes, I agree.

It`s almost like the translator is searching for the English word for scream not very loudly

If I may say a word

    Hello,

In another life I was a translator/occasional interpreter. It is not an exact science. Schwarz could well have said "cried out" and the interpreter translated it as "screamed". The former makes more sense, as I see it.

    Best wishes,
    C4

    Cook book

    Hello (again) Jon. Thanks.

It is a theory book. He spends much time discussing "The Star" and their role in the "Autumn of Terror."

    Cheers.

    voluminous reply

    Hello Jon. Thanks.

"Yes. It is possible to scream at different levels of volume, just as we can shout at various volume levels."

Quite. But ALL volumes for a scream are loud.

    Cheers.

Indeed Mike. My gut feeling is he was swinging around her by her scarf.

    Which is Cook`s book?
Is it a reference book or a theory book?

Yes. It is possible to scream at different levels of volume, just as we can shout at various volume levels.

Imagine you`re directing Fay Wray arriving on Skull Island when one of the natives jumps out on her and you ask her to scream.
The next day you`re directing her again, this time it`s the scene where Kong appears for the first time and you ask her to SCREAM.

But, as has been mentioned in this thread, we`re reading a Hungarian translation, and not a short essay by Dickens.

    Thanks Jon.

I also remember another account where the newspaper is comparing the City Police with the Met with regard to helpfulness towards tthe press. The press were literally asking the Desk Sergeant for news.

I guess the Star had a reporter hanging around outside Leman St Police station following developments.

    Hello Michael.

At my age, "bed" indicates only one operation.

    Hello Caroline. Thanks.

"Yet you can't get from three not very loud screams to a bit of squealing?"

The problem for me is a "not loud scream". Something there is that doesn't love an oxymoron.

    Cheers.
