    Hi Perry,

But trimming the worn hemline of a secondhand skirt is hardly the same as making the kind of substantial alteration to its length that would make it less cumbersome for "working". In any case, trimming doesn't always imply shortening. It can mean adding a trim, either for decorative purposes or, in the case of a worn hemline, to extend the garment's useful life.

I would also love to see photos of these skirts you claim were being made to end just below the knee in the 1880s, and acquired by unfortunates to wear while working the streets. It's certainly the first I've ever heard of it.

You may feel as safe as you like in assuming the flower and cachous would not have been a regular part of a "work" night for her. It doesn't really matter either way, since this was no regular night, for her or for anyone else.

She was a known prostitute, who may well have been seen earlier that night in the company of one or more men, and she was found with a 'pretty necklace' but no money, killed swiftly and efficiently for no apparent reason by an unknown knifeman as she was hanging around a club after midnight.

I feel fairly safe in assuming that the above indicates something very irregular indeed.

    Season's greetings!

    Love,

    Caz

      Hi Caz,

Of course the "regularity", or otherwise, of what happened later in the night would have had little bearing on how Liz's evening started out.
