  • New Pic of Tumblety

...well, at least it's the first time I've seen it. Add put it next to the photo on the front cover of T. Riordan's book. Notice the mustache is not too prominent at the time of this drawing.

Excuse the typo. Omit "Add" and add "I".

I found this in an article from the Daily Argus News, 26 Feb 1889.

Nice Tho you may get in a spot of bother for publishing the photo without an ok from Mr Riordan... Since I hadn't seen it yet, I'm pleased tho.

There is a nice photo of the front cover of his book on another thread, so I merely copied that one.

I've just been told that Chris Scott found this picture about five years ago. Well Chris, I'm only five years behind, so I'm catching up!

Question: Is the relatively small mustache (at least for Tumblety) and accurate representation at the time the artist drew it, or did the artist exagerate how small it really was?

          Sincerely,

          Mike

Mike - my eyes (or brain) might be playing tricks on me but that moustache looks absolutely unique. It seems to have both a droopy "Zapata" element and some seriously well waxed horizontal "handlebars". Where is the sketch from by the way?

            Regards,

            Steve.

Boy, doesn't that fit Tumblety like a glove to do both. So, maybe the below picture is correct also, where sometimes he likes the handlebars, sometimes he likes the "Zapata" and sometimes both.

                    Hello mklhawley

As you see this is almost the same as what you posted though the caption and appearance of the illustration you posted is somewhat different. . . .

                      Chris,

How interesting. Look at the subtle differences in the pictures. I wonder if an artists redrew the drawing for their paper.

I would say so. The matter of artists copying from other artists back then is I think a fascinating topic in itself.

The picture on the right (photo) Is a full dress U.S. Army officer's dress uniform from the 1870s. By the time the uniform was extant, Tumblety was in Europe so are we sure that is him? Also the gent in the photo is a bit younger than Tumblety would have been. Are we sure it is him?
