Maybrick really didn't apply much thought to this, did he?

In this instance, Mr. Wood was claiming that Maybrick wrote the letter dated October 8, 1888 and sent from Galashiels, Scotland, or more specifically, Innerleithen.

      "John O.

I finally got the reply from Shirley confirming what was written in her book. In light of what she says perhaps you would like to comment on the probability of Bill being wrong? Anyway here it is:

"Hello Peter...its so good to know it is all still going on.....yes Keith
Skinner has confirmed too that when he showed Bill Waddell the Galashiels
letter alongside the authenticated writing of Maybrick Bill said "one and
the same" and he is not a man easily impressed."

The letter, if I recall, mentions visiting tweed factories, hence the attempt to link it to Mudbrick.

Of course, tweed is generally made out of wool, so why Messrs. Wood & Feldman were attempting to associate a cotton merchant with these factories is something of a mystery.

If it was Innerleithen (bloody miles away from Galashiels), why is it referred to as the Galashiels letter?

          Ike

Goodness me, I note from my copy of Letters from Hell, that on October 8, 1888, Jack managed to post letters from London NW, Bethnal Green, Innerleithen (written in Galayshiels, sic), Lille, Birmingham, London EC, Dublin, and finally Whitechapel.

He certainly got around did Ol’ Jack!

It amazes me why Peter Kurten would have to disguise his normal hand. What would make it distinguishable from every day German script from the time?

A Northern Italian invented Criminology but Thomas Harris surpassed us all. Except for Michael Barrett and his Diary of Jack the Ripper. And let's not forget David Berkowitz with his advanced Homicidal Occupational Indicators in his Son of Sam Cult story.

                Good morning, Ike.

I don't know if it is now possible to set aside former hostilities and work in a spirit of cooperation---with the mutual goal of obtaining 'sufficient certainty,' as you put it--but if you think it is possible, I'd like your help in unraveling one small detail. Perhaps one of your correspondents can help.

Did Anne Graham ever confirm that she was employed at Caringbah Hospital in Australia in the 1970s? None of the published sources go into enough detail to be certain, or even to be uncertain. Even the most detailed account only states that she worked as a nurse in Sydney.

                It's not a trick question.

                Cheers.

A highly irrelevant question, it is. It’s not even Maybrick “periferology”. Unless you still believe the family provenance.

Research is much easier in the wide open periphery.

It's only irrelevant to those who can't think.

Of course, when the writing doesn’t match someone’s normal hand, he must be disguising it so he wouldn’t give himself away at the same time by naming his children and his wife.

But if the writing matches somewhat to the diary which no one else would have seen, he’s not disguising himself so he would give himself away by mentioning cotton instead of tweed.

Not even Socrates could think up these doozies.

Do you ever write in plain English? He mentioned his family etc therefore giving away his supposed identity therefore there is no need to disguise his hand. That it’s not in Maybrick’s hand because we are dealing with a bunch of amateurs who couldn’t accurately forge handwriting.

Is there anything about this diary that you can’t twist to try and make it seem real? Barrett tried to buy a Victorian diary - there is no defence for this. A jury would find absolute guilt in this. That a well to do businessman can’t find or buy a diary or some kind of notebook or letter book but instead resorts to tearing pages out of a book used for photographs is additional proof. Put this in a court of law and the Judge wouldn’t have time to take off his wig and take a sip from his cup of tea before he’d be told that the jury were coming back. Unanimously guilty. Diary a forgery. Game over.

I can't help myself, but these Diary threads remind me of a movie where there are only three people left in the world after a huge blowup. Mankind is kaput. But those handful of people have the will to survive. I admire you small group which gathers here incessantly to parse the machinations of the 1990's. It takes stamina. Staying power.

Again, I salute you - Surviving Diariists, regardless of your take on it, pro or con.

Specifically, I more & more think of it as Hell in the Pacific--just me (Lee Marvin) and Toshirō Mifune (Ike), but I don't mind assuming the Japanese role.

                            I like the Japanese.
