True. The Small Faces always rocked. The shawl never did.

      • Hi Chris,

And an extremely Merry Michaelmas to you.

As you were included in the acknowledgements of Russell Edwards' book, perhaps you would care to detail the extent of your cooperation.

        Regards,

        Simon

That was the extent of our contribution.

          • Hi RockySullivan,

When someone starts spouting the Bible all hope for rational discussion becomes lost.

If, on the other hand, he seemed surprised, then we probably have a real problem.
                Top post Theagenes. Thanks.

Yes, if JL seemed surprised - then 'Gordon Bennett!' as they used to say where I come from.

Damn Jon, you and me must have gone to the same market stall. You must have got the imitation one. Bad Luck.

As a stick-in-the-mud, I prefer to wait until the real Michaelmas, 11 October.

Just like the Inland Revenue, the pre-1752 calendar cuts it for me.

                              Oh, I don't know, Simon.

'Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?' Matt 7:16

There seem to be quite a few thorns and thistles in this thread.

Well all right, Harry. I prefer the full OED but I agree. A nonplussed person is doubtless surprised, but a surprised person is not necessarily nonplussed. My quote from the SOED was intended to show the difference.
