Thanks for these pictures Rob. Arent they great! They give a real flavour of the atmosphere that surrounded Chapman"s trial and the murder of his young "wife"!

There good aren't they Norma. I was looking for something else that year in 'The Illustrated Police News's and realised there might be some illustrations of George Chapman in there.

        sketches

Hello Rob. Well done. Those sketches capture his personality, I think. Delighted he doesn't live next door to me!

        The best.

Well I probably wouldn't have gone to him for a short back and sides.

As for those "musical shaves" when he lathered and worked the razor while the customer offered up his throat and Mrs Spink played the piano .....! Ugh! .....even now the thought of it gives you the creeps!

These illos are awesome, Rob. Even though it's generally agreed he wasn't the Ripper, Chapman was an interesting character.

              Yours truly,

              Tom Wescott

So, The Police News seems to have put much energy in these illustrations in 1902. Is it a stretch to assume the editors were convince Chapman was JTR?

                Sincerely,

                Mike

                  Mike,

I do think it is probably a bit of a stretch to think that. This was a sensational murder trial in its own right as two bodies of women who had lived with him immediately before their deaths as his "wife" were exhumed during the lead up to the trial and post mortems revealed they had been poisoned. When Maud Marsh ,his last "wife" died ,a post mortem had revealed she too had been poisoned, making it three in all.So the case rightly caused quite a stir!

Love the illustrations! The barbershop illustration could be right out of "Sweeney Todd"!

What is the rather dramatic picture of Chapman and his wife on the boat all about. I know he had a boat, called the mosquito wasn't it?

Godley is quite a queer looking fellow as well, he was suppose to be overweight or stout wasn't he? Could be a dead ringer for Robbie Coltrane in From Hell. Good casting there!

                          Hi Pablito,
He and his wife used to go sailing regularly---him in his peaked cap and blazer! One time when there was a storm they nearly both drowned. Some thought Chapman had seized the opportunity to try and drown his wife.

If he did plan to murder her in a "drowning accident" the picture (if true to the facts) shows some bad planning. There are three people in the boat - who is the third person (a man) who looks seated? Of course maybe George would have made sure two did not make it.
