You may be right Ms Diddles, but I am not sure in the dark alleys of Whitechapel a witness could still have been able to see the remaining skin.

For the first time in history a moustache has been mistaken for a beard Ms D. You saw it here.

So not only are people being eliminated if they had a beard two years after the murders (I’m assuming that 2 years before would count too?) Also being eliminated are people who might have had beards that might have been mistaken for non-beards do to the size and shape. What about the possibility of eliminating any suspect not recorded as ever having had a beard but who might have grown a beard in the autumn of 1888 and then shaved it off? What about people who were very messy eaters and had food around their mouths which in the dark might have been mistaken for a beard? Or what about people with very light, pale beards which under street lighting might have appeared as non-beards. And what about people wearing a dark scarf around their neck which might have covered their chins and looked like a beard when it wasn’t? Or what about people wearing a very light scarf around their neck which might have covered a beard leaving a witness to think that they didn’t have a beard?

Have I missed any beard-related possibility?

If we were doing this fairly we would either have to show, a) that the suspect can be proven to have had a beard during the murders (photograph, drawing or testimony) or b) that we have numerous sources just before and just after as to make it almost certain that the suspect would have had a beard at the time.

Probably never existed, but that doesn't mean he is immune to Elimination

Yes. "No one ever saw the Whitechapel Murderer." - Melville Macnaghten.

Robert Anderson's myth of the "one person" who saw the Ripper is an idea that only solidified into fact by 1910. Contemporary MEPO reports and other records show the police had no idea who did, and who did not, see the murderer or murderers.

The police were quite willing to investigate bearded men in 1888 and afterwards.

Don’t mention Macnaghten Roger. You know what happens.

If its not deemed a problem that we don’t know if a suspect even had a beard in the autumn of 1888 but it’s considered incriminating that someone had a beard years later (so much so that it’s thought prudent to eliminate him) then what might we deduce from this chap?

”…he goes about the streets and picks up bits of bread out of the gutter and eats them, he drinks water from the tap & he refuses food at the hands of others. He took up a knife and threatened the life of his sister. He is very dirty and will not be washed. He has not attempted any kind of work for years."

Now, if someone has an aversion to even the most basic levels of cleanliness and has no care whatsoever for his own appearance I’d suggest it unlikely that he’d have been keen on shaving either. So there’s a very real possibility that he would have had a beard at some point. Is he eliminated too?

                      Hi Ms. Diddles,

Also, I think that picture of Chapman was taken about 14 years after the Whitechapel murders. His moustache might have been a little smaller 14 years earlier.

If he had a scarf round his neck or his collars up, he'd look like a non-beard though, Baron?!

Yes, all those bearded suspects were able to hide their beards under their clothes, not only Sutton
