  • rumours and hearsay

    Hi all,
I was talking to someone today about local history (gravesend) I mentioned the early suspect " Piggot" who was arrested in the popeshead. The guy I was talking too didnt know about the incident but went on to tell me that his great gran used to own another nearby pub at the same time, and the rumours that were flying around at the time and very popular with sailors who used the pub was that the ripper had fled to the states.

I wonder if these rumours were quite popular at the time in London as well, I dont recall reading that..Im not sure how much was reported about Tumblety at that time either, and ofcourse that was the first name to come to mind.

    local history

Hello Spyglass. Local history can teach us a lot about a given situation.

There were rumours that "Jack" was an American because:

    1. The "Dear Boss" contained some American slang.

    2. His head gear was perceived as American (Yankee slouch hat).

    Cheers.

      Hi Lynn,
Thanks...although the rumours amongst the sailors were that the killer fled to the states ...didnt mean he was an American.
As another thought, would I be right in thinking thst Piggott was the frst suspect where a black bag was reported in the story?

      Regards.

        Goldstein

        Hello Spyglass. Thanks.

Quite possibly. But it seems that Goldstein really got it going.

        Cheers.

          Hi Spyglass

The suspicious milk drinking man seen by Henry Birch on Saturday 1 Sept had a shiny black bag, However the Henry Birch story didn't make the press until after the double event.
