Since 99% of here obviously know many many times more knowledge on the subject then me, Is there an accepted Jack the ripper? Do the experts concur in anyway that the most likely subject is X?

I did some looking around and there is a special from 1988 called "The Secret Identity of Jack the " on hulu that was pretty good and there is a special on Sunday night 9pm EST US on the Discovery channel called Jack the Ripper in America which looks to prove that the ripper moved to America.

The special I referred to on Hulu has me pretty convinced that it is Aaron Kosminski... But, I still think Mary being the ripper is much more fun.

      Hi Pr1mate,

I am a bit confused here. What was it exactly that Mary needed to make a clean break from?

Well, who's to say that she faked her death after she'd killed the other four victims? She could've just as easily have mutilated herself.

          hi again pr1mate...

further to your theory, do you actually believe Mary would be responsible for the physical acts of murder, or just that for some mysterious reason her need to escape necessitated the deaths of the others and the faking of her own death?

I find it quite difficult to conceive of a woman being responsible for those murders, for them actually to have been committed by a female hand. In which case, there is still an unknown 'Ripper' out there, in essence, whether acting on Mary's behalf, with or without her blessing.

I don't personally subscribe to any of the above, it just got me thinking that's all.

Oh, and i agree with Garry...don't be discouraged. You are in the perfect place to learn heaps if your interest lies in this period. I've had my mind changed lots of times as i learn new things, and am never afraid to admit it...a change of mind is a sign of growth and learning, i think. So, roll up your sleeves and get stuck in!

            for consideration

            Hello Mate. You state:

"I wasn't saying she murdered the woman to go to Ireland. No idea why she killed the others but the last one was for her to make a clean getaway."

OK, ask yourself this: Why did she need to make a clean getaway? Who suspected her?

            The best.

Of course suggesting Mary Jane Kelly as a suspect, despite the very high unlikelihood, is an interesting exercise as it gives an opportunity to consider and formulate argument against her candidacy for the title Jack the Ripper.

Now, it should be relatively easy to come up with arguments against the proposition and in doing so start to think about what characteristics do make for a good suspect.

The real skill then comes in formulating arguments against the more mainstream suspects with reference to the scant evidence and applying, where feasible, modern knowledge and theory on serial killers.

                Hi pr1mate,
You may be interested in a book written by Callum Reuben Knight called Jack the Ripper: End of a Legend which forwards Mary Kelly as a suspect
                Best regards,

If you want a book with MJK as a suspect, a much better written one is John Brooks Barry's The Michaelmas Girls.
