There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.

A Reak Breakthrough
I've been away from here due to a broken computer all month. And now I'm back and...some things never change. Like the creator of this thread.
Breakthrough huh? Well actually there was a real breakthrough.
Last month the Canadian government released photos of the rediscovered remains of Sir John Franklin's second ship, HMS Terror, found off King William's Island, and lost with it's sister ship, HMS Erebus, in 1846-48 (?) with the exploration party of 129 men including Sir John himself and all his officers. The "Erebus" was found two years back some 31 miles north of the "Terror's location, also underwater.
It doesn't solve what killed the men of the expedition (lead poisoning in their canned food, scurvy, cold, starvation have been suggested). Nor does it tell us where Sir John's grave is (a piece of writing said he died early in the massive tragedy). But the discovery of the two vessels (now that it is complete) does prove a breakthrough. It turns out that the local Inuit tribes had honestly reported the sinking of both vessels amidst the ice flows, and their approximate locations. Score one for local testimony of the mystery.
And gee...it did not require going to "the archive" on the mystery, nor telling us that the creep who killed several prostitutes, increasingly mutilated them, and left one as a human version of sliced, butchered meat, suffered from (would you believe it) a mental problem. I had thought the individual had nothing worse than an occasional cold!

Yes, this is slightly facetious though. There is a difference between a brain problem and a mental problem. One does not necessarily imply the other.
Nobody disputes that the Whitechapel killer had certain psychological issues. But it is surely open to dispute whether he was or was not mentally ill in a clinical, let alone legal sense. Plenty of similarly savage killers are not, so all this 'oh and there was me thinking he was completely normal!' humour at Pierre's expense is slightly missing the point don't you think?

'What is wrong my dear?' she asked..
'It's the carpentry business, it's not doing to well' Joseph replied..
'Don't worry my dear all we have to do is make a little prophet..' said Mary.Last edited by Geddy2112; 10-08-2016, 12:55 PM.
