Wimbourne Cemetary has a peaceful and restful atmosphere and certainly has no place for tourists.

It is intriguing that the grave marker has been refurbished. This must have been done very recently and makes one wonder why after all these years.

I personally hope he rests in peace irrespective of whether he was Jack the Ripper or not.

    Hi Nick....

Druitt was a character of "Sanctuary" a pretty successful kind of cult show that started free on the web then moved to mainstream Canadian TV.

So I offer up the possibility of fan/actor/production staff of Sanctuary may have something to do with the headstone cleanup.

      Hi Dave,

Good find and how bizarre! I've never heard of the TV series but you may be on to something.

I found this link which may be another explaination as to why it was cleaned up.

I presume whoever would have to get permission from the Druitt family for any refurb. I believe the family still have connections in Wimbourne.

        Nick,

Your find seems more plausible I think. Especially if they were filimg a funeral scene.

On Sanctuary, I got about halfway through one episode when it first came out....I wasn't impressed.

However the reviews seem quite good and Monty seems quite a popular character with the shows fans.....might be worth giving it another try.

About four years ago I was invited by the Town Council of Wimborne to give a series of talks on Montague Druitt.
At the time I noted that the headstone was in a poor state of repair. I spoke to the then leader of the local council and I requested a quote from a local stonemason. The cost of replacing the headstone was in excess of £1000,00.
Subsequently a local theatre group made a short DVD video about Montague and his relationships with his Cousin Emily.
I have no doubt but that this was the reason why the stone was eventually repaired.
Until about ten years ago the Wimborne Council, and residents, tried to avoid any connection with Druitt and the JTR killings. Now however, no doubt recognising the tourist potential. they happily embrace the possibility that Jack the Ripper may be buried in their churchyard.
I hope that this information will be of help.

Re Abberline being buried in same cemetery as Druitt I believe his cousin (I think Emily but am not sure) is buried not far from Abberline. It is said in the pamphlet prepared for the unveiling of the blue plaque on Abberline's last home that he is buried in the same cemetery as a relative of Druitt.

                Hi,

Abberline is buried in Wimbourne Road Cemetary in Bournemouth which is a different location. Montague is buried in Wimbourne Cemetary in Wimbourne along with his immediate family.

I believe Montague's cousin James is buried in the same cemetery to Frederick Abberline.

                Best Regards

Might be the wrong thread but just found a record that in 1889, Rev Charles Druitt (cousin of Montague) was given leave from his church due to ill health. Not totally clear but seems to be early in the year.

Very interesting could this be something to do with the story of the confession to the vicar who was based in Scotland?

Could well have something to do with the confession to a clergyman, except Charles wasn't in Scotland he was in Dorset, at one time in Weymouth where my family spent many generations as clergy.

Hi gut ,very interesting info I always thought sir mellville must have had something more than just gossip to name Druitt ahead of kosminski. If the source came from a priest Sir Melville would have taken it seriously also he would have kept quite about the source of the "private information"

Hi gut,if Druitt had been named by anybody else apart from a very high ranking police officer I wouldn't really take it to seriously. When you throw into the mix Druitt been choosen over kosminski it makes me think that there must be a little more than gossip involved in this.I do believe that our killer did not live locally which points me again towards Druitt also I believe the killer was free from family restraints which Druitt was.I do fully except that Druitt could be guilty of nothing more than been mentally ill but to me he is my favoured suspect or should I say the best of a very bad bunch

                                You say:

Can you elaborate on this because t has always been one of my biggest concerns about Monty.
