Thanks, I personally can't see it but I'm crap with those 3D things as I've a lazy eye, so no matter what I do I'll probably never spot your theories. What is interesting though is the areas you say have writing on are the parts I think may have been 'cleaned' or wiped down...
Here are SOME of the areas I believe have been written on...
The one circled with black outline is written upside down.
Possibly the word "Frances"
Some of the words look like they include...
"Friends"
"George"
"Anna"
"Frances" (black outline)
"Flanders"
"My"
A word ending in "SS"
There are other areas that I have not highlighted.
The trick is that it only works if you zoom in and then zoom out again.
Try zooming in on your laptop to one of the areas i have highlighted, then keep tilting the screen to try and reflect the image. (a bit like one of those optical illusion toys that has 2 pictures depending on how you move the object; so it appears almost 3D)
Once you have down that, then zoom OUT and then look again and it should be clearer.
I believe the wall is covered in written messages involving a George, Frances, Anna, Friends etc...

This is the part of the picture that caught my eye...
Sorry blown it up so it looks a bit crappy. Those curved/circular areas remind of a 'clone brush' in Photoshop and look totally unnatural, which is what caught my eye. I presume they did not have Photoshop back in 1888 or even in the 1970s when the picture was found but they did have sponges and clothes.
I know, barking up the wrong tree, just an observation, nothing more.

The first thing I notice though is the word "George" written on the wall
Or possibly "George St"
It's located about 1/3 up from the bottom of the photo, towards the left hand side of the photo as you look at it.
I have mentioned it before but it was not picked up on, so thought I'd try a 2nd time.
Not spotting them, maybe you could highlight them for me, thanks... is it near the FM?
Can you imagine though if when poor Mary was discovered the 'Juwes' was written in her blood on the back wall, they would have certainly have had to wipe that off before the photo and then that would have thrown the graffiti conversations all over he place.
Just been looking at some of the photos associated with the case and got me wondering about poor Mary's room. In the crime scene photo it looks to me if the wall behind her could have been 'cleaned' or had something wiped away before the photo was taken. Possible?

Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
But the trick is to Zoom right in and then slowly zoom out again...
I wondered if it had resulted from previous wallpaper that had been torn? Probably not. As Gareth said, likely just random patches of ‘stuff’ that had built up over time.
Chances are we're looking at random patches of grime and/or damp that had built up on the panelling over many years. There may even have been some wallpaper there once, with some of it now torn away. It's hard to be sure given the age and quality of the photograph, but I don't see any actual smears that would almost certainly have been visible if the wall had recently had a wipe-down.
