They were probably found next to a gate because he needed the gate to make a quick getaway.

Tea Leaves A Bitter Taste On The Curley Tonge..

        Hey Monty,

What was the name of the ex-policeman/ nightwatchman at Mitre Square,
        please?

        Hammramr has asked.

        Hammramr:

You are correct, finding and questioning the possibilities behind links is always a worthwhile avenue to go down. (It's not as lonely as Monty's "Mean Streets").

As regards the Tea merchants link, not only did the Cutbush lad work in a Tea Merchants premises: Sir Melville Macnaghten's family had Tea plantations in India; the M.P. who spread the 'drowned suspect theory' (Henry Farquharson M.P.) died on his way back from his tea plantation in Ceylon (Sri Langka)...
If you look at the East End Photographs and Illustrations thread, you will see many signs advertising "Fish & Chips and Tea and Coffee", or "Lipton's Tea" advertisements.

It seems the East End Docks area was awash with Tea. Unfortunately, most of it washed past the locals to the more genteel establishments and drawing rooms of Britain. The locals seemed to prefer their liquids stronger.

But, that's an exaggeration. There was a marvellous song called " Right Said Fred" a Cockney song about a couple of Furniture Removalists.

They didn't shift much furniture but they sure shifted a few cups of tea!

See if you can Google the lyrics. They are very funny. And might put the relationship between English people and Tea into a clearer perspective.

        Good Luck and...Cheers!

        JOHN RUFFELS.

And to top off Scott, three bodies were found next to a gate.

This may already have been pointed out, but I think wooden fences or gates were no coincidence - the women chose them, because either supporting themselves with their arms/hands, and presenting their rears to the "punter" or standing with their back to the fence/gate, they had some "give" (at least more than a brick wall would have afforded.

Hence I think Nichols (stabe gates), Chapman (backyard fence) and Eddowes - who's head was pointing to a wooden wall or hoarding - took their killer to a usual place for what they thought was planned. They KNEW the good spots.

Stride was also killed near gates, but in a very public area where people were passing by and there was relatively little seclusion (which Buck's Row, the backyard and Mitre square offered) - hence i think that an exception.
