1-How much would a "top hat' cost in 1888?
2-While comiting the murders would the hat have stayed on his head, or would it fall to the ground to get mucked up and thus possibly ruined?
3- Could a cape possibly hinder the movements of a killer as he forces his victim to the ground kills then evicerates.
I would bet my entire years pay that Jack dressed just like the rest of the locals.
Simple clothing not expensive not movement restricting thats what he would have wanted.'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - beer in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride!'

There is no doubt that wealthy people also frequented the East end in search of 'action' - that may have been lacking elswhere. We know that Prince Albert(himself a ripper candidate) frequented brothels there. The same way the notorios 'Golden Mile' (Kings cross) district in Sydney attracts the top end of society, and the bottom. There is no way you could rule out a mentally deranged upper class gent, who would have had better opportunity to kill in the jungle that was the East end, than the quite West end.
As for the popular image. I noticed the term ' real life' in the thread. There in lies the problem. We are all well aware now in 2010 that there are people willing to alter, or forgo completely, 'reality' in the unscroupulous pursuit of profit. In the world of fiction, which has become a sea of mental illness, one now has to be very wary in decerning 'reality' from the crud. This goes for movies, TV and books. Jack the Ripper, wether rich or poor, would not have worn an outfit that would draw attention to him.So maybe choose J.Lawende's description as a best bet.
