  • Thanks Chris,

I only ask because the BBC1 TV show Casualty 1907 showed several nurses in an area not unlike this last night.

They were revising for their nurses exams and it was the spitting image of this area.
    Regards Mike

Not entirely certain, but I think it must be this sort of angle (map 1894) ...

...a couple I came across recently:

            1. The corner of Wentworth St and George St (right opposite George Yard).

The "Carpenters Arms at nr 57 was a beershop run by a Mary Ann Beech. Next door there's a doss house and then a pub, "The City of Norwich" (Thanks Rob), where they had boxing taking place in the saloon!

            2. Flower and Dean Street from Commercial St.
The building with the "ornate" lamp(?) support (in the middle) would be the dosshouse at nr 32.

Great pictures, most of the pubs in Hull during the 1800's were used for Co.ck fighting and had little Co.ck pits in the rear of the pub!!

              • I take it our American Cousins do know what Mike is referring to? I have folks from the US up at the castle all the time and when I explain to them that in the late 17th century the ruined keep was used as a co.ckpit, they think I mean something to do with planes.

                Here's an old engraving of a co.ckfight in a co.ckpit...

                • Just saw this in a book of WW2 photos.

It looks a bit like Bucks Row doesn't it?

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE KIDDING MR HITLER was specially written as the Dad's Army theme tune in 1968.

I also had the pleasure (if that's the word) of going on one of Philips tours. Seriously though I was quite impressed with the amount of info Philip gave and how enjoyable it was. Just don't expect any sympathy if you fall over and twist your ankle.

Thanks for those phots. Very creepy and atmospheric, particularly Puma Court. I remember visiting Durward Street in 1986 (walking through the wonderfully (and smelly) Woods Buildings right as the sun was setting. I felt the shadow of the Ripper.
