East End Photographs and Drawings

Thanks for posting it up, Rob. This photograph captures what Chaim Bermant called the 'deluge' of Jewish immigration to the East End in that era. Thus it appears on his book cover.

I think it's not the locations near Stepney Gasworks or Limehouse Causeway. The photo is either nearby Middlesex Street (see map post 3007) or it's in the area below, where Booth described the Jewish residents of Brunswick Place and Provdence Place off of it to the north side.

The map shows a typical court with arched alleyway entrance as with Millers Court and the photo shows 2 buildings in the background that correspond with those on the map.

Video Tour Inside St. Mary's Underground Station

I just stumbled over a really cool video; it's a guided tour of the old St. Mary's underground station between Whitechapel and Aldgate.

The original 1884 structures are still standing and in this video offers a pretty good look at them. There's also an interesting segment which discusses the station's use as an air raid shelter in WWII- the rather primitive ventilation system installed then is still intact.

This image of London by photographer Robert Frank is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
(An amazing museum if you ever have the chance to visit.)

Its dark fog-enshrouded streets struck me as having a dreamlike yet somewhat 'Ripperish' effect... I love the illuminated warning sign that says simply "LOOK".

Just for future reference, should anyone wish to ask, i have all the photos in this thread in a file and they can be accessed with ease should the person need me to. Will save trawling through god knows how many pages to find something...took me a while to do it but it was well worth doing, especially when i do it on a slideshow !
