  • Stephen Thomas is absolutely correct.
I belong to those whom Philip was kind enough to send a copy, and I have studied it over and over again - it DOES match the old contemporary illustrations perfectly. It simply can't be anything other than Dutfield's Yrad.

I have to say that I am disappointed with quite a few people here. Sure, one should always be critical but it is a fact that some peopole have proven themselves over the years to be honest fellows with no pretentions or commercial intentions, not to mention being very skilled authorities in their own fields of speciality and therefore would be quite realiable in terms of establishing if any such picture would be genuine.
Philip is one of those, and those who accuses him of committing a hoax or even being mislead should be really ashamed of themselves. Philip has over the years contributed with pictures and helped people without any request of getting something back in return, and now when he finally wants to keep this gem to himself for a while so that he will get the chance to be the first to publish it, people are accusing him of all sorts of things.
I am disappointed with all you. As far as I am concerned you are all idiots and should be shot.

    All the best

P.S. AP says he wants to destroy the 'dinosaurs' - I assume he also counts himself in that.

Oh Glenn, what would we do without you? I'm never quite sure whether you are smiling or scowling to yourself as you write glorious stuff like this.

Made me spit my tea out laughing anyway.

Oh okay. Well we'll just take your word for it then. Thanks for clearing that up. Any other statements of fact we are all just supposed to accept on your say so?

I'm sorry..."no commercial intentions"?? Have I lost my mind or did Phillip not publish a book of ..wait for it...PHOTOGRAPHS of the whitechapel area?

And I agree that no one should necessarily accuse him of a hoax, but as for being misled? A person can believe something, and I can believe they believe it but that doesn't require that I believe it until I see it for my own. Sorry charlie. If Philip didn't want to open his find to public scrutiny then he shouldn't have come on the boards announcing he had it. Once he did, he opened himself up for exactly what happened here. The "I've got something but you can't see it" routine is annoying no matter who is doing it.

I kind of think the same about people who just believe what others tell them without being allowed to view the evidence for themselves.

        If only.

I am questioning the authority and authenticity of photgraph claiming to represent Dutfield's Yard in Whitechapel.
I couldn't give a baboon's arse who owns it, or who found it.

Erh... yeaaah. And please enlighten me how 'commercial' publishing one single book on such a subject actually is? Or do you belong to the same confused woldpack as AP, who believs that an author actually makes any money or commercial benefits from this?
If anyone thinks there is money to be made on this sort of thing (unless you have had five or six books out and they've sold a mastodonte number of copies), let me hereby once and for all destroy this illusion.

You're questioning anything where you yourself haven't been involved.
In other words: you question it because someone else and not you found it. We all know how you work. The ugly face of green envy - although discoloured by cheap brandy - in its most pathetic shape and form.

                • I understand and recognize the realities of the Ripper publishing business and the fact that no one is making a mint. But it is categorically false to state that they have no commercial interest invested in publishing books on the Ripper or in being the one to make a find.

Unless Phil has announced that all his limited proceeds from the book have gone to charity, he has a commercial interest in the matter. Even if it's only 200 pounds. SO far however, the find has netted him a plane ticket to America, a few days in a hotel and the cost of several meals. How much did that all cost?

Unlike AP, I have no problem with people making money off the case, and I have no problem with Phil holding on to the photo, for whatever reasons, even if it's to get as much $$$ out of it as he possibly can when the book is published.

But, bottom line, if you go in public and state you've got something and do a nyah, nyah you can't see it, then you open yourself up for the kind of questioning that occurs.

                  • I think the term 'commercial interest' to be not quite right.
                    'Vested interest' would be better.

                    'nother cablegram for Mungo':

I am a good looking, well off, independent, highly successful businessman, who just happens to be a widely published author of some notoriety with a passing interest in the Whitechapel Murders.
Keeping things neat and tidy is what occupies me.

... did I miss something, or is Phil bringing out a Berner Street commemorative vest? If so, sign me up.

I presume AP will provide the pants.

                        And that's total bullsht AP.

                        And so is this:

I have no time for jealousy.
So answer this. Why precisely are you going out of your way to try to discredit this photo? You are not remaining neutral, as would be the logical choice. No, you are so fervent to discredit this photo, that you are making wildly idiotic claims about what the photo contains.

You haven't seen it. You have no logical basis to have already made up your mind that it is a fake, and yet you are putting up patently ridiculous claims about a photograph you ADMIT you've not even seen?

So what exactly is your motive? Other than of course the sheer petty, guttersniping that characterizes your every move on the boards when it comes to anyone making a discovery or publication of merit in the field.

My stance on this is simple: If you haven't seen it, reserve judgment.

                        What's yours?

Listen to me, queene. And I won't say this again.
You and several others had a good chance to see the picture and it's temporary release was well 'advertised' in advance in due time. You had the chance to see it, and you missed the ferry. Tough luck. So stop whining! Get f*cking over it!

Philip has over and over again explained that the picture WILL be there fpr all to see once that booklet is out. The fact that he wants to wait is because he for once will have the first turn of enjoying his own discovery. And when the photo is published everyone can make up their own minds about it.

This just shows what a backstabbing community this is, when people like Philip who for years have lended out pictures to others without asking anything in return and who has put others first and himself last. Now, because of the importance of this discovery, he chooses to be careful about it, and look what happensImmediately a lot of whining, criticism and echoes of fraud.

I tell you, you can all go to hell. And I hope you all fry.

I am going to say this once and one time only. Get over your fcking self. No one is required to take you or Phil or anyone at their word. You saw it for free, you wern't required to pay 500 bucks for the privilege of viewing it, were you? and you want to badger others who didn't want to pony up several hundred dollars for the privilege? I have one of the largest egos in the free world, but even I am not so egotistical to think that just because I believe something, everyone else is required to.

So check yourself, and YOUR freaking whining that I don't consider you or Phil godly enough to tell me what to believe.

                            • Firstly, no one was requred to pay 500 to see the photo, m'kay.
It was advertised well in advanced that it would be shown in low resolution for a very short while and there was no money involved.
I have no idea what 500 you are talking about.
Everyone who doubted it ever existed, had the chance to see it without paying a nickle. Although in low resolution. And the 'event' was well advertised.

So stuff that nonsense up your *ss, will you?

Then you and AP can go and dig a hole for both of you.

It's not a matter of excercising an opinion, it's about not concurring with character assasination on a man who for years have helped other people and other researchers without asking for a single penny in return.

I say it again - I had no idea this was such a backstabbing community, and I now better understand people like Stewart Evans and others who are watching their backs and have stopped helping people for free.
