Honestly I'd almost have thought it would have been faster to get news that the dogs weren't available in 1888 than it would be today, under some circumstances (I'm always chagrined at reading about things like mail delivery several times a day & posting a letter in the morning/receiving it in the afternoon, etc. The LVP seems to have our "progress" beat in some few respects!).
[As for those two police dogs-yes, I saw that awful story(I read the BBC every day); as both a dog lover and a friend to some involved with K9 units here it was wrenching to read about. Our Humane Societies have a great example set by the RSPCA to catch up to.]
