Thank you, Jon. I appreciate having the scenario described in detail which makes it easier for me to understand.
Honestly I'd almost have thought it would have been faster to get news that the dogs weren't available in 1888 than it would be today, under some circumstances (I'm always chagrined at reading about things like mail delivery several times a day & posting a letter in the morning/receiving it in the afternoon, etc. The LVP seems to have our "progress" beat in some few respects!).

[As for those two police dogs-yes, I saw that awful story(I read the BBC every day); as both a dog lover and a friend to some involved with K9 units here it was wrenching to read about. Our Humane Societies have a great example set by the RSPCA to catch up to.]

Help with good scan of Warren being chased

Does anyone have a decent scan of the illustration of Warren being chased by Barnaby and Burgho? I'd like to use it for podcast art.

      Thanks,

      JM

        Interview w/Barnaby & Burgho's Owner c.1900

        Hi, Jenny!

Here is a link to a detailed interview with Edwin Brough, the owner of Barnaby & Burgho (aka 'Burgundy'). I found it published in a 1901 collection of journal articles.

Edwin Brough Interview -Barnaby & Burgho's Owner: http://forum.casebook.org/showthread...hlight=Barnaby

I'm a dog lover myself so found it interesting....You guys might too.

Jon, I used to have a good scan of that one, will check.

        Best regards,

                Burgho & Barnaby in America

New York Times, June 22, 1889, link

CITY AND SUBURBAN NEWS; NEW-YORK. BROOKLYN. LONG ISLAND. NEW-JERSEY.

The steamship Holland, which arrived yesterday
from London, brought two very valuable
bloodhounds consigned to John L. Winchell,
Fair Haven, Vt. They have already become
famous as the dogs used by Sir Charles Warren,
the former Chief of Police of London, in his
attempt to discover the Whitechapel murderer,
"Jack the Ripper". The dogs have been
brought to this country for breeding purposes.

They named one of Burgho's puppies Jack the Ripper.

The illustrations are from well-known show dogs, and are the best type of the Bloodhound of to-day. That of the three puppies is from a photograph taken on the day they were two months old. They are the average ones of a litter of eleven which the dam raised without any assistance. The sire was Burgho, dam Rosemary. They are of the St. Hubert type, spoken of by Sir Walter Scott. They are darker in color and generally larger and more powerful than most of the breed. One of this litter, at six months old, weighed over eighty pounds, had ears measuring twenty-six inches, and his head was twelve inches long. Champion Barnaby is one of the best all-round Bloodhounds of England; his sire is Champion Nobleman, dam Brevity. The red and tan Duchess of Ripple, and the black and tan Rosemary, are proving themselves two of the best breeding bitches of England. Duchess is a great prize-winner, besides being the dam of more and greater show dogs than any Bloodhound living. Her sire was Timbush II., dam Patti. Rosemary, her companion, has probably more of the Southern or St. Hubert blood than any Bloodhound known.

                  Burgho's & Barnaby's OFFSPRING in America

According to the New York World, the two dogs on the Holland were not Burgho and Barnaby, but Belhus, a son of Barnaby, and Rosemary, apparently carrying a litter of Burgho's puppies. Winchell claimed that Belhus was used to track JtR.
