Daniel Halse

Hi All,

I don't know about you, but I've always imagined DC Daniel Halse, [City of London Detective 607], to be in his late 20s/early 30s. He was, in fact, 45 years old at the time of the WM, the same age as Abberline.

Here are his family details from the 1881 [LDS] Census Records—

Daniel Halse, Head, 38, Abbots Langley, Hertford, England, City Police Constable

Margaret J. Halse, Wife, 40, Taunton, Somerset, England, Constable's Wife

Virginie Tabourit, Niece, 11, (BS), France, Scholar

Dwelling, 28 Jewin Crescent, London, Middlesex, England.

Margaret Jane Halse's maiden name was Evans. She married Halse in September 1875.

Virginia Evans Tabourit died, aged 17, in December 1886 [BMD Index].

Throughout the 1870s there was an Inspector Halse, M [Southwark] Division. I do not know if they were related.

Ive always had him as middle aged. He is almost certainly pictured in the Snow Hill photo of circa 1887 and the earlier one. Front row shows CID in their finest. Question is which one is Dan?

Hi folks -

It might not help much, but Halse (d.o.b. 19 May 1842) was 5'8" tall, with brown eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion.

Yeah, sorry bout that. Wasnt sure if the mail went. If its any help, the photographer has placed the constables etc in almost identical positions in both photos.

Page 232. Its a photo of the City boys around 1887. Harvey is noted. Halse should be there as should Watkins. There is another earlier photo, taken on the same spot with almost the same personel. This is in Richard Jones new Casebook, p24 or 26. I may have some news on these photos, pending research.

By the way,kittycats...there's NINE pages of material relative to Halse sitting down at the City Of London Police archives. I asked about Halse some time back but couldn't swing the dosh.

Does anyone know if DC Daniel Halse [City of London policeman 607] was related to Mr. R.C. Halse, City of London Alderman and Deputy Governor of The Irish Society, which managed the City Corporation's estates in Londonderry and Coleraine?

while I have not, so far ,found any connection to either M. or R.C. Halse, this may interest you

According to the 1851 census Daniel Halse's parents were.,

Thomas Halse b,1800, Bovington,Abbots Langley,Paper Mailer, and His wife Maria
he had two brothers.,
William, b1830, Bovington and
James, b 1836 Abbots Langley

James went on to be a Paper Stainer
but according to 1881 census.,
William Halse, b 1829, Bovington was a
Superannuated Inspector of London Metropolitan Police.
