Didn't I read somewhere, a long time ago, that the key had been lost for a while and the occupants used to put their hand in through the broken window to get in from outside? Probably they broke it for that specific purpose.

I think I remember Kelly breaking the window when she threw something when she had an argument with Barnett.

You're probably right. I don't think Barnett was the Ripper, but we can't assume that everything that he said was true. But if I had to guess, I would think that most likely this is true.

The "missing key" was a red herring. It reinforced the idea that CV5 was a locked-room murder.
