    Sewers & Carriages

Just some random thoughts! Could Jack have used the Sewers to escape?
Could the murders have taken place inside a carriage?

With respect to the sewers, he didn't need to.

And, if you find the time you might like to read both the medical & police evidence concerning the victims,...

There you will read why it was decided that the murders took place where the bodies were found.

quoting the daily news of October 2nd

      "
"Have you heard it suggested that the murderer may possibly have managed to elude the observation of the police and to get out of the immediate vicinity of his victim by means of the sewers?" "No," replied the officer, laying down his pen, and settling back in his chair with a look of interest, "you mean that he may have got down a manhole into the sewer and made off underground?" "Yes, that is the idea-not perhaps very feasible, but it may be not totally impossible." "Have you ever been down into the sewers?" was the officer's inquiry. "Ah! Then you know something of the difficulty which would be experienced in getting about underground. Besides, how would he get up again? He would require a key to get down, and he must shut down the grating and the iron flap after him, and even with a key I don't think he could get up again. If he could he would be more likely to be observed creeping up out of a sewer than by walking quietly off through the streets. No," concluded the officer, "I don't think there's much in that notion." The City police expressed pretty much the same opinion.""

        Hi All

This might not be the right place to post the following, but anyway.

Could it be possible for the ripper to escape, by climbing onto the roof of some of the buildings?

I have no clue. The only thing I remember reading is the largest building in Whitechapel at the time (or is it the tallest) was right by Nichol's scene of crime.

and I probably remember it wrong.

Ok well maybe in that case we can rule the roofs being used as escape after Nichols' murder.

Then again, it may not be impossible to believe, people now adays do indeed climb high buildings and hang off the edge for fun.

I think, just my opinion, that Jack was definitely earthbound and not climbing anywhere after Nicholls's murder. He had good heating and excellent reflexes, enabling him to nick off as soon as he heard Charles Cross's hobnail boots approaching in the distance. (Of course there's always the possibility that Cross was Jack. He did have a false name!)

Of course he had good heating - he specialised in old boilers...
