It seems like a few years ago I read on this forum that the GSG was written on the side of a union building and the acronym for that union was JUWES? I can't find that discussion now. Am I wrong?
Hello Kwestmo. I believe that Tom Wescott conjectured that it might have been intended as an acronym for the International Workingmen's Educational Club.
Acronyms are written in capital letters, the wall writing was 'Juwes' and not 'JUWES' according to all transcriptions and descriptions.....well, almost ;-)
Hello Neil. I'm not so sure. Perhaps you are right, but I have come across many in letters/diaries and news articles from the period. My take, for what little it is worth, is roughly the same as today.
"Never thought of that one. Not sure they referred to themselves that way.
Do you think there is something in it?"
I think it is slightly ingenious and a good example of thinking outside the box on Toms behalf. But I don´t think myself that the writing on the doorjamb said IWMES, no.
