Well I was using the plural there, fine lady.

The singular (wally) means a particularly stupid person in Britspeak.

Of the etymology of this 1970s word I have not a clue.

Hi Steven, thank you for the definition.

I guess "wally" is used in the same way that we in the States say "What a Bozo!" (as in Bozo the Clown.)

    Best regards,
    Archaic

Maybe it would be a good term for Ripperologists who believe the killer wrote the Goulston Street wall graffito?

(Except I'm not sure I want to be called that until I know what it means.)

    Thanks,

    Hello, Archaic.

I believe the term "Wally" may have been coined by cockney comedian Mike Reid in the 1970s. "What a Wally!" meant "What an idiot" or fool. The phrase caught on, unlike his other derogatory terms like "What a Lenny" and (my favourite) "What a Wilf!"

    Best wishes,
    Steve.

They look like wallies when they don't wear their helmets properly, not when they do. Monty's description of the correct way to wear the helmet is spot-on.

    Regards, Bridewell.

    Hello Tom,

Thanks for the kind words - glad you're enjoying the mag over the past few issues.

We've been fortunate in that there have been a large number of exceptional articles submitted recently, and this is set to continue with our next issue - see the Rip thread for details.

The door is always open for something form yourself, you know that!

    All the best
    Adam

Ripperologist has been running hot this year. I wouldn't envy the editors if they chose to bring back the Beadle award for 2012 and have only one winner.

    Yours truly,

    Tom Wescott

    Albeit slowly.

One of the issues is the availability of those concerned. Some of the staff work part time hours and this, coupled with leave, illness and the recent Jubilee celebrations have bogged things down a little.

Also, on top of that, further avenues have opened up which are, at the moment, being explored.

Believe me, Rob and I are still on this.
