  • Letters of Denunciation

We all know the letters allegedly sent by the Ripper. But shouldn't there also be a lot of letters in which the writer is claiming his suspicion against an other person ("My neighbour was it..., etc).

I can only remember those letters sent by Forbes Winslow and that one of a man (whose name I cannot remember at the moment) who overheard at an Italian port (Genoa?) two men talking about going to London to do sinister things.
But I would think that there are lots more (sometimes anonymous).

What happened to these letters? Are they preserved? Where can we find them?

    Best regards,
    Frank

    Hello Frank,

Sadly, though inevitably, there was probably a "weeding out" process done with all the correspondance recieved, either shortly after the files were closed or during the intervening time until the files were opened to the public. What was considered relevant and what wasn't. Abberline said at one time, I believe, that they (the police) had 1,600 papers on the subject!

    best wishes

      Hi Frank,

some are mentioned in "JTR, SY Investigates" (letters sent to the City Police), but surely more were sent to the Met.

      Amitiés,
      David
