This is sad news.
It was a pleasure to meet Jeremy at the 2007 conference in Wolverhampton.This was my first conference and I remember feeling slightly nervous at meeting everybody for the first time and a little lost until I got my bearings.I was sitting down with a pint and I heard Jeremy's voice behind me.He put his hands on my shoulders and cracked a light hearted comment about my baldy head shining under the lights.I remember that he squeezed my shoulder as he said this to show it was meant in the good humoured spirit in which it was indeed taken.For me,it was a real ice-breaker and Jeremy then went on to announce what was happening and where everybody should be heading next.This is now a fond memory for me of a genuinely nice man.

Jeremy Beadle will be sadly missed by us all. His 'Plastermind' quiz at the Whitechapel Society Xmas Bash last December was easily the best Christmas party in our history.

Jeremy was a simply splendid person who really went out of his way to make people feel welcome, a professional through and through. He was in many ways the public face of Ripperology to the rest of the world and also perhaps its strongest advocate of bringing people of different views together. He will be greatly missed.

I've just heard the News at 10.00. Was busy trying to get my tax return done but just had to quickly pay my respects on casebook.

Jeremy was a genuine expert and true enthusiast who will be greatly missed by ripperologists. A man greatly underestimated and a true television genious.

My sincere condolences as well. I am quite shocked by the news, since Jeremy appeared to be his normal self at Wolthers. I expect many of us expected he would pull this off, but apparently he didn't.
He was not only a professional entertainer but he also knew his Ripper stuff, so he knew what we all were about. A great loss and he will be deeply missed.

Dan made a great point about Jeremy having a certain gift of bringing people with strong diverging views together - this and his big heart probably is the best way I will remember him.

I was on the train home tonight from London when I got a text from Suzi saying it was a shame about Beadle. I didn't know what she meant until I got home to an answerphone message from my mum saying he'd died. I too thought he'd pull this one off.

Like many, I last saw Beadle only last month and my final memory of him is of me yelling at him to get on with the answers to the quiz and him doing it as slowly as possible to wind me up. I'm happy to have that as a last moment.

Beadle was not only affable, he was highly intelligent and very witty. He was so much more than a TV prankster.

Rest in peace, big man. You chose a Hell of a way to get out of having to read your auction-won copy of EPIPHANY...

My deepest and sincere condolances to his family and friends. Jeremy was familiar to me not only through the photos on Casebook but on his early shows that delighted us kids on Aussie TV. That's how far his generous heart had reached. Will miss the good humour of this man, time for a break mate.

Indeed, Glenn. I thought Dan's observation that Jeremy went out of his way to make people feel welcome was on the money, too. I'd never met him before Wolverhampton, but on the very first contact I felt as if I'd known him personally for years, and felt instantly at ease with the guy. A rare gift, that.

I'm totally gutted. He was such an amazing man. At the conference Melissa and I were standing at the refreshment table chatting to him and he picked up a Chelsea bun to eat. Just as he got it to him mouth, the entire middle fell out leaving him standing there with just the outside ring and him peering through it at us. The look on his face was priceless and then he just burst out laughing. That was Jeremy.

It's a very sad month for Ripperology.

Im so sorry you all have been losing your good friends lately. Ive been checking out Jeremys work on youtube. Seem to have been a very talented fellow. Now I only wish that I had started working on the "Riddle" many years ago because Im not sure but I think I can make at least some kind of contribution towards unravelling the mystery. And I would have liked to have known how they felt about some of my ideas.
I hope I can live long enough to make some kind of difference in the Case.

BTW..I was wondering who finally got the book.

Oh man, am I gutted,

I was so nevous before my Wolves talk. He introduced me as 'That bastard from Leicester'. I retorted with a thank you Matthew Kelly as he walked off to which he stopped, slowly turned and smiled that wicked smile we love. When I finished I turned to him to let him know Im done. He winked at me and it was then that I knew I done ok.

I would also like to thank Jeremy for his encouragement. He was insistant that Jake and I should strive to get our stuff published, I hope we wont let him down on that.

My last talk with him at Wolves. I asked him to sign the conf book. Wont tell you what he wrote, its personal to me, will say that he thanked me and again encouraged me. Such enthusiasm to a stranger who wasnt in his eyes.

Jeremy Beadle, RIP
Yes, just to add my own sadness at this news. We spent many happy hours over the years laughing at Jeremy's television programmes and he will be greatly missed. For anyone to die at the young age of 59 is a tragedy, especially so someone with Jeremy's talent. Although he was only ever awarded an MBE he raised millions of pounds for charity and he still had plenty to give in the future.

Sincere condolences to Jeremy's family and to his many friends.

Yet another occassion when I swear and curse at my own shyness.

I would have loved to have had the nerve to chat with him. Not that he was in any way intimidating; just surrounded by people, giving all of them his undivided attention. And I'm one of those people who just sit and listen and watch.

But while sitting and listening and watching, I thought him a remarkable man - genuinely funny and witty, highly intelligent, thoroughly unique. And now I wish I'd told him so.

Mind you, he'd probably have just made another comment about cleavage.

I still am genuinely upset by his passing, and my thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. Jeremy Beadle leaves a whole in people's lives that probably can't be filled.

I remember one time.............
I wonder if anyone would mind if I started a Jeremy Beadle thread? I don't mean condolences or that sort of thing, but a space where we can post anecdotes about him? I have my memories of him and I would love to hear other peoples recollections. I will kick off with this one:

Jeremy Beadle passed away last Wednesday, the world lost a comic genius and I lost a friend. Most people know Jeremy from his TV shows; I got to know him through a shared interest in crime, especially Jack the Ripper.

I first met him at the First International Conference on Jack the Ripper in Ipswich in 1994. He had taken on the task of acting as host, MC, quiz master and just about everything else. For all this work he wouldn�t take a penny. Every two years since then he has appeared at every conference, tackling a work schedule that would have dropped a fitter man. Even when he was under the weather he always made sure that the show went on, treating strangers as if they were long lost friends and friends like family members. He last appeared at the conference in Wolverhampton in 2007, to my great regret I didn�t manage to make that one so never had a chance to say goodbye.

He had a mischievous sense of humour that was never far from the surface. One incident sums up the kindness and generosity of the man perfectly. It was during the 2004 conference in Liverpool, which was held at the Adelphi hotel. The main reception area was flanked by two large conference rooms, in the right hand one was a wedding and in the left was Jack the Ripper. As I walked back to the conference with Jeremy and my brother I noticed the bride in full wedding fig complete with veil standing in the middle of the reception area. My brother and Jeremy returned to the conference and I stayed behind for a smoke. Very shyly the bride approached me clutching hold of a pint mug of beer. In that careful deliberate manner, used by those who have drunk too much and young children, she spoke to me.

�Here, your mate doesn�t half look like that chap on telly�.

�Does he� I asked� which chap is that�

�The one with the beard, he looks like that one who�s always playing jokes on people, Jeremy Beadle�

�I suppose he does a bit, lets go and tell him� taking my arm she accompanied me into the conference where we quickly cornered Jeremy.

�Hey, this young lady thinks you look like Jeremy Beadle�

�Jeremy Beadle? Frightful fellow can�t stand him� came the reply.

I suggested that she might like to have her photograph taken with this errant look alike, to which she readily agreed. So there they were, the bride in her wedding finery, clutching a pint mug of beer, with her arm round Jeremy Beadle having her photograph taken at a Jack the Ripper conference. You couldn�t make it up!

Bye Bye Jeremy, the world is just a little bit poorer for your passing.

That's fantastic Bob,

I grew up on his antics and loved Beadles About, I remember looking around when ever we parked the car near water just in case he was in the area!!

It is such a shame this master of the art has now gone, and it will not be the same without him.

He affected so many people in so many ways but always for the better.

Now how many people can say that!!

Nice story. I'm sure that the couple were told the truth in the end. In the 1980s I was constantly stopped in the street by people thinking I was Jeremy's sidekick Matthew Kelly . 'Ere it's that bloke off the TV'. I met Jeremy just a couple of months ago at the Christmas Whitechapel Society meeting which may well have been his last public engagement. I left a bit early but according to the WS Journal his last words to the audience were:

'I feel my job is done, Lord you may take me'
