Great reading all your thoughts. Pretty much summed up my thoughts when I first read it last night.

How reliable is mitochondrial DNA testing AND more to the point would that stand up as reliable evidence in a court. I saw somewhere that the result of this test would implicated 4 in 10 people using this type of test. What would happen if they blind tested 10 living people, would they get a mitochondrial DNA match from 4 of the 10 ?

            1. How reliable is the test on Eddowes' descendant, bearing in mind that there are good reasons to doubt the provenance of the shawl?
            2. Mr Edwards states that the shawl was too expensive to belong to Eddowes. How then did Kosminski afford it?
            3. How reliable is the vacuuming DNA test? Has it been used in other cases and independently verified as a proper scientific method?
            4. Will Mr Edwards and Dr Louhelainen allow other scientists to check their conclusions?
The first three questions are kind of tricky, but I have a fair idea about the answer to the fourth one!

              Hang about...

MtDNA testing... Patricia Cornwell did her 'conclusive' DNA testing with Mitchondrial DNA .... I believe it is non specific and common to around 40% of the entire population. 4 in 10 has been written which is right.

If two men say they are Jesus, one of them must be wrong. Cornwell or this fellow?

And here is something that somebody won't like.

That "shawl" has been lying around in Scotland Yards "Black Museum" for around 10 years..,. never even on display until re-claimed by it's owner. It was the Black Museum that held for many of those same years the infamous Swanson Marginalia and the same museum who have been promoting the Kosminski suspect idea for their own re-vamping using said Swanson item.

              1. Eddowes wasn't wearing a shawl that night according to the police themselves.
              2. If she was, then Amos Simpson stole it, whilst the body was in situ. Or on it's way to the mortuary where the clothing list was made up.
              3. Excuse me, but a filthy dirty shawl that has never been washed for over 125 years? IT WOULD STINK to high heaven!

You can bet your bottom dollar that a certain well known Ripperologist is involved in this somewhere. Someone with good connections to the Black Museum.

              Cynic? Moi?

What a load of complete rubbish.

We can laugh... but the people who cook these things up should be ashamed of what they are doing. And it is high time the whole of serious Ripperology got together and stopped this merry go round nonsense once and for all.

A serious crime was committed and people are taking the p*** again and again. All very well to put down the Tony Williams of this world.... now let us see who gets this thing canned in the same manner. I fear it won't happen, because of WHO is behind the scenes pulling the strings.

              Laugh? It makes me sick.

another question to the scientist should be how many other dna profiles were found on the shawl ?

That's the bit I don't agree with either.

                            Hello Trevor,

The age of the shawl gets me... early 19th C...and that it came from Eastern Europe.

Is that supposed to be a hint that can tie in Kosminski?... Now how the heck does it do that? Are we supposed to believe Kosminski gave the shawl to Eddowes? How did Eddowes get a shawl worth that much when she had to pawn Lord knows what to eat?

Absolute poppycock and rubbish from start to finish.

                              Dear all,

I wonder if anyone could tell me whether this Mr Edwards is related in any way to Ivor Edwards? He of former Ripperological fame, with his book connecting the occult and the crimes?

                              Many thanks

Why send this to The Daily Mail (of all papers... not got a great reputation anyway and hardly the most read).. why not send this stuff to a scientist/Scientific magasine or even the British Medical Journal?
