    Ripper sites in 2025

Hi, all. I’ll be visiting London in a week and I want to visit some of the ripper sites. I’m hesitant about a tour, particularly as I’d want to to be a smallish group run by someone I trusted (I know several people from the message boards used to give tours, but that was a while ago).

I know the C5 murder sites have all changed radically, but any suggestions or tips on these or any related sites would be appreciated.

    Hi CP,

One thing that you could do is to get Edgar’s Walking Guide No One which is Jack the Ripper’s East End which is an A5 size book written by Richard Jones and Adam Wood (both of whom know their stuff) With this book you begin at Aldgate East Underground, Exit 1 and finish at The Ten Bells 3 hours 45 minutes later. Obviously you can walk at your own pace and stop at any time for food/drink. It takes in all of the murder sites (except for Dorset/Duval Street which no longer exists) You also get the Pinchin Street arch, the former Commercial Street police station, the site of the entrance to Swallow Gardens, St. George’s-in-the-East mortuary etc.

Directions are easy to follow too.

It is a touch expensive though. The cheapest that you get get a copy for is £17.17 and of course you woulld need to check that you were going to receive it in good time. It’s a very good book though and I’m certainly considering getting one of the other guides.

Thanks - from a previous visit to London I picked up a small self-guided booklet but that early 20 years old now and I’d bet more than a few locations are now out of date.

Do any of the tours end up within walking distance of The Ten Bells?

Gunthorpe Street, a narrow cobble stoned alleyway, seems to retain some of the character from its past. You can stop in the White Hart for a drink, too.

There's no connection to the Whitechapel Murders that I'm aware of, but it's nice to take a stroll along Fournier Street as so many of the red brick housing from the era is still standing and it gives a real sense of what the area may have looked like in the Victorian era.

Thanks! I was going to ask about areas that are atmospheric and relatively unchanged - I’ll check that out.

              Hi CP!

I seem to remember that when I did the Edgar's guide walk, the most atmospheric part of it was the area around the old mortuary and the Swedish Church.

We did it mid-January and it was late afternoon and just starting to get dusky by the time we got there.

I’ve done around 4 maybe 5 ripper walks over the years and I’m pretty sure that every one of them finished at The Ten Bells c.d (as far as I can recall)

One year my evening started and finished there. I had a pint of three with Steve Blomer in The Ten Bells and then he walked with me to the start point of he walk. Two hours or so later I was back at the bar.

                    Nice work, Herlock!

We finished off our walk with a pint in The Ten Bells.

You started there, then did the walk, then returned there for more.

                    Respect!!!

The UK pub industry needs our support in difficult times Ms D. It was purely out of a sense of public spirit of course.

                        No problem c.d.

The best 2 walks that I’ve done were led by Don Rumbelow and John Bennett by the way. I’m sure that Richard Jones and Phillip Hutchinson’s walks are excellent too.

I wonder if anyone on here remembers John Pope De Locksley? I saw him once but I never did one of his walks. A strange character.

Any particular walk that you preferred or recommend, Herlock?
