I think the police were that desperate that any suspect was better than no suspect.
However here we are in agreement.

With so much material missing, don't think I can agree with that one.
Hi gut, like I said if they had anything at all on anybody I think someone would have been arrested and charged. For example kosminski picked up a knife to one of his family after the murders so as he lived in the east end he might be the ripper I think the police were just desperate fair play on them that they didn't fit some innocent person up just to save face.

But they arrested plenty of people on suspicion, just had to let them go.

They also needed enough evidence to convince a jury, just like today they really didn't want to bring a prosecution that was doomed to failure, because they couldn't recharge him, they had to get it right the first time.

Hi gut, surely if they had such a suspect who was arrested all the police men who put pen to paper years later would agree upon a single name.

But there are two problems, every one that they did arrest they had to let go for lack of evidence. It seems to me [opinion only] that there were planty of suspects just not enough evidence to send him to the high jump.

One of the problems for us 125 years later [again opinion] is that they had too many suspects and funnily enough, over the intervening years rather than whittling those down we have added to them with [what I regard as] totally ridiculous suggestions.

Hi gut,I don't personally think they had any real suspects at all the ones that have been written about were just looked at out of desperation by the police.

I'll have to go looking for names but I have in various writings seen references to a number of people being arrested but not charged. I seem to recall some claims that Tumblety was at one point arrested on suspicion of being dear old Jacky and when they couldn't make it stick at the time, he was charged with the indecent assault.

                    G'Day all

The doctrines of autrefois acquit and autrefois convict persisted as part of the common law from the time of the Norman conquest of England; they were regarded as essential elements of protection of the liberty of the subject and respect for due process of law in that there should be finality of proceedings.

This is why prosecutions weren't bought until there was thought to be enough evidence to sustain a conviction.

Basically autrefois acquit means I have already been acquitted for this charge.

Hi gut,I think tumbelty was an embarrassment to the police because he was in their custody and bailed so he was followed up quite discreetly.Mr tumbelty was reported to have a collection of organs including wombs now if he wasn't a proper doctor where was he getting his organs from?Could the police have thought this after all Chapman, and eddowes had there wombs removed and Nichols killer was properly disturbed before he could remove any organs from her.

G'Day Pink [Dont mind me giving the trade name]

I agree totally, they were totally embarrassed, they let him slip. I would be disappointed if the reports of his uteri collection didn't raise red flags.

Hi gut,it explains why there is nothing in our newspapers about him unlike the American newspapers.p.s have you read Stewart p Evans book "the lodger" he puts a very powerfully case for tumblety being our killer.

Yep and I can't see a lot wrong with it, I think he deserves, along with two or three others, very close scrutiny.

Do you think tumblety murdered Mary Kelly?

The one question that really stands out to me is why did he [Jack] stop? if he did. Then of course a second question, when did he stop?

I know Serial Killers stop [Zodiac and BTK stand out] but I know of no example of a SK of Jacks MO and Signature stopping.

Answer, he's dead, incapacitated, in an institution, or left the country.
