Digitised Historical Directories For England & Wales

Hi everyone. I came across an article referring to Victorian 'Street Views' available through digitised 'Historical Directories', and clicked on the links to have a look.

The project digitized many different types of old directories, such as the 'Post Office London Directory', and was carried out by the University of Leicester with National Lottery funds. It's quite an ambitious project, and looks like it will be a terrific resource for all kinds of historical research, genealogy, etc.

To use the Historical Directories website you choose a city - oh, let's pick London - and a decade - how about the 1880's?
    Then you can enter keywords.

I'm still playing with it, but I thought I'd go ahead and post this so others can have a go.

    Article in 'The Spectator': http://blogs.spectator.co.uk/books/2...tories-project

    View AS PDF

Just noticed, when a directory page comes up you can go above it to the "View PDF" button, click on it, and then you have the option to save the file as a pdf or print it, etc. Very handy!

      Israel Zangwill

I just looked at the 1884 Oxford Rd. directory, and my eye fell on the name Israel Zangwill!

I double-checked, and he did live on Oxford Rd.

Don't be surprised if you get a hit. Ripper is an English surname. Take actor Micheal Ripper, a Hammer Films regular.

Thanks, Archaic. I've saved it to my favourites!

              Hi,
its a good source of information - its a Uni of Leicester invention i believe so I have known of it for some years. It can be cumbersome to use, and even with fuzzy logic, not always perfect, so takes a bit of perseverance. It isnt a full repository as yet.

              Good luck

                Hi Jenni.

I'm still learning how to use the 'Fuzzy Logic' setting.

It's funny, I always thought "fuzzy logic" was something to be avoided!

                Best regards,
