Here's my initial wording:

Did the victorian police/authorities know the identity of Jack the Ripper?

• Jack;s identity was known to parts of the police/authorities after the murders and supressed it.
• Jack's identify was known to parts of the police/authorities during the murders and supressed it.
• Jack's identify was not known to the police/authorities.
• Not sure / don't know.

Unless someone can improve this before I drink my current, nearly full, diet coke, I'll go with this.

OK, here I go, sorry. -- What if I believe in a Free Mason conspiracy (which I don't) with no connection to Scotland Yard or other official authority. I got no choice to pick from.

It is somewhat reasonable to believe that a conspiracy outside of the police may have been at play (I don't).

I'm not certain about revolutions and genocide.

A conspiracy requires a reason, a punch-line. A and B did whatever, so that C would never suspect that D murdered E. I've been reading about the murder of Himmler in 1945. But he committed suicide, I hear you cry. He bit down on a cyanide capsule. Really? There's a lot of evidence to the contrary, even when you discount the forged documents planted in the P.R.O. Or were these documents planted as part of the conspiracy? It's hard to tell which way is up.

And so it is with the Whitechapel murders, which had nothing to do with a sexual maniac.

Perhaps if we took a breath and stopped trying to identify the man who never was, we might discover what was actually going on.

If I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd have a theory. I don't, but still believe there was a conspiracy afoot.

The targets (the prostitutes) don't lend themselves to a conspiracy theory; right from the get go you have to involve powerful people with what was (as rude as it might sound) a series of 19th Century crack ho's and that usually does not happen. These women simply did not live important enough lives to become a fatal part of anybody's conspiracy.

Every theory starts off with some kind of Alien Space Bat logic and then from there figures out how to become even more illogical.

It was Churchill's father, based solely on the testimony of a strange (maybe homeless) man who couldn't explain why he was hanging outside Miller's Court most of the murder night . . . nice distraction, score one for him . . .

Matthews, Anderson, and Warren all become high ranking Free Masons when in reality only Warren was a FM . . .

The Jews were willing to look the other way for six murders because they feared more 'Lipski' bad press . . .

How patronising to women.You can't impose 21st century gender concepts on the the 19th century, Mary Kelly, shock! was a woman. She may have been quite strong, it may surprise you to know that many working class women were very strong, they did jobs like coal heaving, moving goods to market stalls, carried heavy weights, even housemaids engaged in physical labour and carried buckets of water, coal etc up and down stairs, and from the accounts i have read of female fights could throw a good punch. Arthur Mumby loved the physical strength of Hannah Cullwick the servant he secretly married.
