Bloody hell lads and lasses..it was a film not a documentary.
I know it must stick in the craw when someone trots out with the sealed knot society totin' a tommy gun instead of a halberd, but this is totally different...allied to the fact that since reading this forum the vast majority of "experts" spend more time disagreeing about the case than agreeing....books are written about the subject that seem to be a D.I.Y course on nailin' fog to a wall...and suspects range from cricketers to crown princes from baronets to billingsgate , whats the harm in a flight of fancy for a change...lets face it some have sold books using the same premise...

      Point taken Andy, thanks.

      Hi Andy,

Fair points you make Andy and well you make them!

In my defence, I was, perhaps naievly, just trying to prevent yet another pointless and unproductive tit for tat match developing on this forum by explaining that I could see both points of view, i.e. that of those who would like to see a serious film treatment of the Ripper, of whom I am one, and those of us, like Stewart (who I felt was unjustly been given a bit of a rough time) who have personal experience of just how little say people brought in as "advisors" actually have.

Sorry if it seemed that I got swept along in the very thing I was trying to prevent! Guess I had better cancel that Arab/Isreal peace mission I was planning!!!

      All the best Andy,

Hi Zodiac ( i just joined the website on the zodiac link you posted earlier..awaiting confirmation)..I honestly do see your point, when you are interested in the factual stuff regarding JTR or whoever it must be galling when you see it parodied to the extent "From Hell" obviously did...but i find sometimes you have to let certain things go for the sake of entertainment..but taking your point i watched it before i got involved on the casebook...in fact it was one of the reasons i found the casebook website...and with hindsight i would probably be looking at it with a more jaundiced eye if the roles had been reversed..
        all the best

            Thanks Andy.

            Hi again Andy,

Hope you find much to interest you on the Zodiac site, though sadly I'm afraid that, much like this site, along with the good and useful stuff you'll find there comes the obligatory "penis measuring competitions" on the forums

You make a very sound and valid point about "From Hell" i.e. that, however flawed it may be, it actually sparked your (and I've no doubt that of others) interest and thirst for information on the Ripper case. My own interest in history was first inspired, long ago, by any number of old Hollywood Pirate/musketeer/swashbucklers, none of which could in any way, shape or form be described as "historically accurate"!!! But, like yourself, without them I might not ever have pursued the subject to a more serious level.

            All the best mate,

A film based on truth can be enertaining and need not be a wooden doccumentary.

Actually the movie was wooden and quite over the top. There are zillions of movies that feed the imagination one based on truth would be refreshing.

I know what you mean mate!!! It was indeed Druitt, along with Elvis, with the scoped M14, behind the grassy knoll!!! Just before they were picked up, by the Rosswell aliens, and transported to the USS Eldridge, which was escorted by TBF flight 19 to the Bermuda Triangle just in time to witness Saucy Jack kill Lola (she was a showgirl) etc. etc.

                  Cheers mate,

Like all of you, I would love to see all the effort put into something historically accurate as has been put into far-fetched nonsense. I've sometimes wondered why the fascination with the royal conspiracy continues when it is so obviously absurd. But just the joking about other absurd conspiracy theories reminds me how gullible people are. When I shake my head in disbelief at those who think it is perfectly believable that the British government kept mopping up after the mad Prince Eddy, I forget the other supposed plots from the highest levels of government, such as the Kennedy assassination and 9/11. Still, I suppose, with all the various suspects still being debated, no one could satisfy everyone. I'd have some "blend in the crowd" forgettable nobody with a fascination for visera creeping around to carve up unpleasant women and die unnoticed. Everyone else would scream, "Where's Tumblety/Stephenson/Maybrick/Kaiser Wilhelm II?" All I ask it that there are no members of the Royal Family, no Freemasons, and no use of Mary Kelly as a love interest.

i could not agree with you more andy s.

like i said before this film simply used real events as a backdrop for a fictional story. i don't understand why all these people on here are constantly yearning and demanding for a jack the ripper film based on the facts. there are not enough facts! and the supposed facts that are presented are constantly argued with by the enthusiasts. i don't think any of you would ever be satisfied with any ripper film made as there would always be someone puffing out their chest and being annoyed that the actress playing catherine eddowes was wearing the wrong coloured shawl

Rude buggers! How dare they! Why begin a board to discuss Jack when the movie can provide all the info that's needed? Is this where we all melt away and this site no longer exists?

You want to make a movie called Wimbledon 2008 then you'd talk about the topic. Yes?

You want to make a movie called Jack the Ripper then who'd want to include facts, yes?

Abberline an opium smoking widower (his wife was alive, he didn't smoke opium, correct me when I'm wrong), who was going to run off with Mary Kelly?

And Abberline had visions about Jack's murders? What a pity he didn't apply them when he was investigating the case.

It isn't a very good film, in my view. It presents as entertainment only - not much point in serious analysis when the film isn't up to it! It's full of cheap shots (and not just the cleavage variety, either). I don't think you could ever have a fictional film based just on the facts because there wouldn't be a story as such, just a series of events. That's the problem with history, it isn't really a story, just a series of events, which, when viewed from a particular perspective, can become a narrative. We do it to make sense of the past. All History is revisionism to an extent. 'From Hell' and 'Murder by Decree' with their use of the Royal Conspiracy idea, have a narrative that makes the 'facts' into a story, which is far more credible for most people (not to mention interesting) than the facts would be. I know that many do believe fiction of this kind to be the historic reality (see also, Braveheart, sire of the Kings of England etc). but frankly, who cares? It's unavoidable, and I'm sure has always been the case as long as there have been people to tell stories about the past!

Well, ramble over, 'From Hell' was a two-dimensional cariacature of 'Victorian' London as far as I could see, with jolly jape tarts, corrupt but yet romantic policemen, naughty Royals and dingy drug dens galore. I was personally suprised that the Carry On team weren't lurking in the bushes - 'Ooh Matron! Ee's gone an dun it again! Twice in one night! Ooh I say!'

'Murder by Decree' was better. At least Michael Caine is meant to be funny...

It'd be better if she had actually died before Lusk plonks her kidney on Abberline's desk.
Truth is female, since truth is beauty rather than handsomeness; this [...] would certainly explain the saying that a lie could run around the world before Truth has got its, correction, her boots on, since she would have to chose which pair - the idea that any woman in a position to choose would have just one pair of boots being beyond rational belief.
