Sorry, just seen this. I can't believe how intent our administration has become on destroying all evidence of our past. Anyhow, won't stumble up onto my soapbox at this hour: petition signed and link sent to colleagues. Fingers crossed, candles lit, prayers offered and so forth...

Hello..first post so please be gentle
I am going to visit this archive next week for the first time, and didn't even know it was under threat. I have signed now and passed the link on to friends.
Thanks for this link - it is so so so important to keep our archives and record offices open and assessable.

Just a Reminder
Your name is needed to save the Bancroft Library. Even if you have never been there or have no intention of doing so - please support those that do - they will maybe find information that will interest you. Even if you dont live in the Uk you can vote as an ex-pat.

Save Bancroft Library
The campaign to save the highly important historical resource that is Bancroft Library is being cranked up a gear as the sell off date of 5th November approaches.
A new website, with the full support of the Whitechapel Society is being set up but is not yet active. The website is:
savebancroftlibrary.org.uk
Also, there will be a campaign meeting this coming Saturday (27th) in the East End to launch a full on campaign to save Bancroft Library. More details will follow.
Until then, let's apply as much pressure on Tower Hamlets council.
ADRIAN.

update
This from the wonderful people at No. 10
The Government recognizes that the closure or relocation of public libraries and archives is an emotive issue and we encourage local authorities to consult communities about changes to services that will affect them. The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, with The National Archives, will continue to support institutions to deliver services and resources the community needs by sharing best practice and advocating the value of well-resourced, responsive museum, archive and library services within communities.
But the Government remains committed to the principle that locally accountable politicians and managers should be free to decide how to deliver library and archive services in their authority in a way which is appropriate for their communities. The future of Tower Hamlets Local History and Archives Library in Bancroft Road is therefore a matter for Tower Hamlets Borough Council.
