I think if we ever find out it will probably have to do with his aging, having daughters, trying to raise them (on his own apparently) while working, and or finally getting some empathy because he now has daughters?

along with this several victims stated during his ransacking/rapes they could hear him sobbing and some said they heard him say something like mommy I don't want to do this anymore. perhaps he was struggling with this dark side and was finally able to overcome it?
