  • Where in Boston was H. H. Holmes Arrested?

Does anyone know where H. H. Holmes was arrested? I only know that he was captured in Boston.

Since me and my friends head out there a lot, I thought it might be interesting to try to find the place.

Made a video about the street. I'm asking for help in finding it because most of the sources online simply say "arrested in Boston" and don't specify. I also couldn't find my copy of The Devil in the White City.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Well, I was able to retrieve some information from an article in the Boston Globe.

Last Tuesday a man arrived in Boston and registered at the Adams house as "H. M. Howell, Denver, Colo." The detectives said he was their man, and they left him neither night nor day. The following day "H. M. Howell" moved to a boarding house in the West end.
After watching Holmes some time he was found to be going to the different railraod offices and making inquiries as to the rates and connections for certain southern cities. It was deemed time to act.

So yesterday afternoon when Holmes was seen to leave the house he was pointed out to the Boston officers by a detective who knew him, and he was arrested on two warrant.... The prisoner was taken to police headquarters.

Now I'm looking for boarding houses in the West End in Boston. And Boston police reports for the date November 17th, 1894.

        Good work, Madam Red!

Holmes is a fascinating character. I posted a link last summer or so to an excellent online documentary about him; you can probably find the thread if you search for 'H.H. Holmes'.

        Best regards,

          Thank you.

After seeing the thread about the Boston Globe article earlier today, I decided to checked the archives to see if maybe they named the street on which he was arrest. I had to pay to read the article, though.

I'm searching for your thread, but haven't found it yet. There are a few named "H. H. Holmes."

It may be that the street/building no longer exists.

Most of the west end was demolished in the '50s, when the City Jail was built, Mass General Hospital was enlarged and Storrow Drive was built, and Scollay Square was torn down and Government Center was built. Also the area around the old Registry of Motor Vehicles on Nashua St and the old Boston Gardens replaced a lot of the old buildings.

Over 7,000 families were displaced by the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

            A bit more information here:

I didn't think of that.... Good point.

The article doesn't name the street or area where he was arrested (I could only buy one at the time), so we won't know for sure if it was destroyed or not. I'll keep looking.

But it could well have gone the same way as Miller's Court.

I'm guessing you're also from Boston?

                H H Holmes Video

Hi Madam, I did a quick search too & didn't see it.
But here's a link to a documentary on GoogleVideo called "HH Holmes, America's First Serial Killer".

The really good one is by National Geographic or Discovery Channel and has a title close to the Holmes book title,
something like "Devil In The White City".

There are segments of some others on YouTube.

                Good luck,

Good luck, but most of the old West End is long gone. Several months ago, I read about a group of old west enders, but unfortunately I can't seem to find the web site again. They are still pretty damn angry about the redevelopment and losing their old neighborhoods.

Yes, life long resident of the Boston area.

                      Yes, it's definitely disheartening.

Whoa, you're the first fellow Bostonian I've met on here in awhile!

If you Google NY Times Archives and do a search in their older archives (from 1851), there are eight articles about Holmes you may not have seen yet. It's mentioned that he was arrested in Boston, but no exact location.

Have you considered using an old picture of a west end neighborhood, a still, instead? You could probably find some great pics in “ Images of America: Boston West End,” Anthony Mitchell Sammarco, Arcadia Publishing, 1998. I've seen his books on Roxbury, Dorchestah and the South End and he always has great old pictures. There's also a hard to find book called "Lost Boston" (Jane Holtz Kay) that has some old photos of the west end.

I found the web-site about the old west end:

                        West End

It's a pity so much of old Boston has been demolished and replaced with sterile high rise office buildings and luxury apartments. Not only the west end, but also parts of East Boston (for the Sumner Tunnel and Logan Airport) and the area that the Southeast expressway covers were once all urban neighborhoods. The area of the west end that borders the Charles River was once home to many mansions. Apparently, there wasn't much love for Victorian architecture in Boston in the 20th century.

You're the first Bostonian I've met on here ever, but that's probably because I've lurked for years and only started posting recently.

Cool! Well, it's a pleasure to meet you then.

                          I'm going to try that.
