  • 50 years ago - 1966 March 21 - Nancy Savino, 4, dies mysteriously after checking into New Jersey's Riverdell Hospital for a routine appendectomy. In 1976, an Argentine doctor named Mario Jascalevich was charged with killing Nancy and several other patients by injecting them with curare. The doctor, however, was acquitted at trial and returned to his native country where he died in 1984. Today, the cases remain officially unsolved.
This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

If I'm not mistaken the doctor was believed to have used some very obscure poison on the victims, and this was why he was acquitted - the jury just could not grasp the nature of the poison nor accept the difficulties of acquiring it.

So did it take 10 years to nab him, or where there murders in between and he was charged relatively soon after the last one.

There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.

GUT-The last murder he was charged with occurred in late 1966 so I guess it took them nearly 10 years to put two and two together.

            • 100 years ago - 1916 March 26 - In Leavenworth Penitentiary, Robert Stroud stabs guard Andrew Turner to death. Stroud was incarcerated because he'd killed a man in Alaska he claimed had attacked and refused to pay one of his prostitutes. The prisoner was sentenced to death for the murder of the guard but this was eventually reduced to life in prison. Stroud later gained a measure of fame as "The Birdman of Alcatraz". He spent the last 54 years of his life in prison and died in 1963.

The victim was one of several Virginia murders perpetrated by brothers William and Thomas Penn over a six week period. Both men eventually got long prison terms. The victims were robbed but the haul seemed too minor to be much of a motive.
