A case is developing of the suspicious death of 21 year old Britt Lapthorne, Australian backpacker holidaying in Croatia. She was last seen leaving a Dubrovnik nightclub in the early hours of September 18 with two men.
What makes this case most tragic and complex, as the parents are now grieving their loss, is that the body was found 18 days later in an advanced state of decomposition at the bottom of a cliff. Initial tests ruled out that it was Ms Lapthorne.
Now the Croation police have declared and informed the family and media sources of DNA confirmation that it is indeed that of Britt Lapthorne. The autopsy reports are expected today.
Another relevant aspect of these tragic events, is on how the internet community responds to cases of suspicious crimes and alleged murders. A Facebook was set up soon after Britt dissapeared and according to Britt's father, "With the help of thousands of people, I think there are 10,000, and certainly there are some tenacious people on Facebook, we've recovered a lot of information, we've tracked down a lot of people, which Interpol, the Australian Federal Police and the Croatian authorities hadn't done. Now at least they've got that data to work on."
