Being a serial killer kills two birds with one stone - taking revenge for your own inadequacies as SKs do, but also using your campaign of enjoyment to become not only eternally famous - but a living symbol of everything evil, taboo and, for want of a better word, anti-social. Being universally hated and having the huffing, puffing moral minded deliberately ignore the reasons you did it, opting for the reasonable cop-out "we'll never understand why he/she did it," gives a feeling of triumph over society. It's a very twisted logic but I've spent five years studying it and I intent to continue.

I have a sneaking suspicion that serial offenders know what they want ("what they really really want") in the 'dark' department, long before they ever turn thoughts into deeds, and that their subseqent social/occupational choices in life are likely to be influenced accordingly.

If a future offender hasn't got the capacity to become a Harold Shipman and help himself to the tools of his trade that way, a truck driver is a rather handy man to be, and his truck a rather handy tool, for picking up, murdering and dumping his victims and leaving few clues to connect them with him.

Just as child molesters are going to be attracted into work and leisure activities that deal with youngsters on a daily basis (the church, schools, scout groups, swimming pools and so on), I suspect that control freaks, serial rapists and murderers will seek out the kind of work or social situations that will give them the best opportunities to cultivate their worst habits.

Certain occupations and professions are naturally going to draw in a disproportionate number of such people, so although it's no reflection on the vast majority who begin a job or career with no underlying agenda, it can very unfortunately appear like it's a common character trait of truck drivers (or priests, doctors, teachers etc), when it's merely the work environment that provides these dangerous but rare offenders with a comfortable and practical means to an end.

He owned a flat in Rotherhithe, South-East London. It's not far from Whitechapel. It's across the Thames and is connected to the general Whitechapel area by the A101 by the Rotherhithe Tunnel.
