    Hello, Jason C,

As I recall the article, there is supposed to be something in the Constitution which says all debts of the United States are to be considered valid and not contested. This good faith leads to the incredibly low interest the Federal government is allowed on its loans. The author felt Mr. Trump is thinking of private businesses which can offer "a haircut" to their creditors, and get a settlement by paying a portion of the entire debt. The author did not feel this is possible in governmental and international relationships, and that Trump doesn't know this.

Do you think Donald Trump is beginning to "pivot" to the center now, judging by some of his more recent comments on controversial issues? If so, is he doing this to win over more moderate Republicans, or perhaps even some Democrats? How do we know what he really intends to do?
Sorry it's taken so long to reply. Yes, im sure there is an element of pivoting going on; pivoting in the time honoured tradition of almost all Presidential candidates. Pivoting to the centre is the playbook of most candidates(Hillary looks like being an exception). Whether it helps or hurts Trump I have no idea. As to what he intends to do; we really do not yet know. That's the beauty and danger of having a non-politician run as Presidential candidate.

    • Good points, Jason.
I am beginning to think, half-seriously, that Trump is "punking" the entire political system and the American public by using his campaign to demonstrate that voters aren't capable of selecting a candidate. Perhaps he'll get the nomination and turn it down completely! (But then I remember he's Trump and has an ego that would love the perks and power of the Presidency.)

Lately, he has promised the National Rifle Association to "get free of all gun-free zones", by which I presume he means local restrictions on guns in shopping malls, movie theatres, and universities. I think these are state and municipal laws, and I'm not sure a president can remove them.

There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.

I'm not sure the Constitution matters all that much anymore.

He has a vague idea because of his comment of looking for a Vice President who can negotiate on Capital Hill for his program. Problem is he has made so many groups angry, I don't think he'll find anyone who can overcome the hostility.

In some ways I hope he never does.

I was more thinking about what issues are local, state or federal, I know a lot of apparently intelligent people here who don't seem to understand.

In that the blame the Feds for State issues etc.

                  • Then this happened at a Trump rally in New Mexico...

Albuquerque police used smoke grenades to disperse a crowd of protesters outside a Donald Trump rally Tuesday night, while other demonstrators were escorted out of the gathering after interrupting the presumptive Republican nominee's remarks.

That sort of thing just helps Trump increase his lead in the polls so I'm sure he's brokenhearted about it.
This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

                        • Okay, here is a more informative article about how other Republicans view Mr. Trump, their differences on policy, and what could happen:

House Republicans will begin rolling out their policy agenda in June. It will, in theory, allow lawmakers to run with Donald Trump on ideas they agree on, and be able to demonstrate where they differ.

The most interesting thing to me was how little Trump toes the line on orthodox Republican policy, and how he runs a personality-driven campaign. He seems irritated when people ask him to really lay out what he'll do and how.
