Yes, people go out to a soccer match, a concert, for a meal and end up dead. Over a hundred people slaughtered, and for what? What good have any of these massacres done? Paris is a beautiful city and Parisians will overcome this, but it's just despicable.

Total I heard is between 150 and 160 dead now. All the terrorists have been killed, which is unfortunate - they should have been kept alive to be questioned thoroughly.

As this is the third terrorist attack (the Russian plane over Egypt and the attack in Beirut are the other two) many think it is a series of well planned coordinated attacks upon the West and it's middle eastern allies.

Unfortunately, we are reaping what we sow for destabilizing the Middle East.

The big game changer in the recent Paris attack is the bomb vest. That means there is still a explosive expert somewhere in France working for the terrorists.

This is the guy I hope they catch.

With all due respect, my darlin, (Harry D.) as Ibn Khaldun said in the 12th century, it will take 3 dynasties to get rid of this. We are only into the 1st.
From Voltaire writing in Diderot's Encyclopédie:
"One demands of modern historians more details, better ascertained facts, precise dates, , more attention to customs, laws, commerce, agriculture, population."

Unfortunately Sir John their specialist may have left Paris before the explosions were set off.

For sure, but with a little luck, he might not have left France before they closed the airport.

French politicians in power today had very hard line talks. Speaking of extrading and removing nationality to radical imams.

(One of the kamikaze was identified. He was French. They also found a passport of a Syrian refugee, but they cannot corroborate if the passport owner was among the attack, or if his passport was stolen)

I saw the title of this thread on Friday afternoon, and went searching for details. Terrible event, and my sympathies go out to all affected by it. One young American woman was among the dead, I've heard.

Today a group of supporters walked to the Denver Capitol building and observed a moment of silence in respect and soldiarty. I was pleased to see many young people among them. We need to support each other against violence.

Have heard they arrested a woman in Beligum, said to have links with the Paris attackers. Hope my British friends will stay safe!

Apparently they have identified one of the terrorists, a certain Omar Ismail Mostefai, just shy of his 30th birthday. From what I've read, the identification was made by a torn-off fingertip found in the wrecked concert hall Bataclan. But how do they know the fingertip is from one of the terrorists, and not one of the victims? He was a petty criminal (which explains how the prints were on file), and previously flagged as a radicalisation risk, but never suspected of terrorist activity until now. He is certainly a good candidate, but it seems a bit circumstantial to me, unless they can prove the finger came from the body of one of the terrorists.

I was just watching a news clip that referred to this as the "worst terrorist attack in Europe in ten years" and that is, of course, a reference to London in 2005. I remember how torn up I was by that incident since I'd been a recent visitor to London and love the city. I have no such experience with Paris but my heart still goes out to them, with nearly three times the death toll of London. I have to say though, that the nature of these attacks with small arms fire and relatively small explosive devices rather than weapons of mass destruction really shows the weakness of the enemy. They make declarations about changing the world, but only manage to make a bunch of noise and big headlines without any large effect other than to bring much bigger destruction down on themselves. I remember Londoners in the aftermath of the bombings there saying "Is that the best you can do?!" I'm sure Paris will bounce back just as well.

Didn't the Madrid bombings of 2004 kill 191 people and wound countless more?

I imagine their aims are :

                              1. Keep the recruits coming by showing that they can land blows, while simultaneously outdoing the other nutter organizations such as Al Qaeda.

                              2. Intimidate western governments into softening their foreign policy.

                              3. Force western governments into removing the normal liberties of their own citizens.

But the real jackpot, from their point of view, would be to provoke a backlash against Moslems living in western countries, which would provoke more radicalisation and atrocities in a vicious circle.
