    Yes, I read about that elsewhere. They were stranded, so Grandpa (a man in his fifties), gives the little girl a loaded and cocked handgun, advises her to "shoot any bad guys", and walks to town, where he pauses to have a beer and burger before asking for help.
    If he could walk, why didn't he carry the child out with him? Stupidity wins again...

      They weren't stranded - if they were, it would make no sense for him not to take her with him to wherever the burgers were. He simply drove her to the desert and left her there. I guess he needed some alone-time... Also, as I understand it, it was some other family member who reported the girl missing, and grandpa never asked anyone for help.
