    2) he was a practitioner in black arts, and knew a prominent news editor.
    3) he was a well known painter who liked to talk about crimes
    4) he was a royal physician who everyone thought was too ill from a stroke to do anything anymore.
    5) he was a vacant minded heir to the throne.
    6) he was a sad religious poet.
    7) he was a barrister and teacher who died by drowning.
    8) he was a prominent writer who wrote poetry and prose concerning a young girl he photographed.
    9) he was the son of a mad judge and died in an asylum
    10) he was an American quack doctor.
    11) he was a Scottish-Canadian-American doctor who was supposed to be in a prison at the time.
    12) he was the owner of a dubious and dangerous hotel in Chicago.
    13) he was a barber surgeon from Poland.
    14) he was a conman and wife (and children) murderer
    15) he was a she who hated a rival
    16) she was a malevolent children's baby farmer.
    17) he was a drunk who killed his wife and found the police may have suspected him.
    18) he wore an Astrakhan hat
    19) his son died of syphilis from a young prostitute.
    20) he was a petty thief who had really awful eating habits.
    21) he was a nutty Jewish guy who threatened his family but was put into an asylum
    22) he was a recently self-injured artist who spoke with a mixed French and Dutch accent.
Or he was all of the above.

I actually have a pretty good idea of who he was talking about, just can't find out why he was thought to be Jack, but I'm still looking.

I doubt I'll ever find anything solid, but the bits I do remember point in one direction. The big issue is why and was the information concrete or just speculation.

THAT'S kind of cool! Very interesting

Btw, I read my mother over the phone all this stuff about Diana Blumenfeld. It's really very interesting. Have never heard of her, but that means nothing, I wondered if I had never heard of her because I'm over here in another country and she's more well known over there or because it's remote history at this point but I can see she was rather well known for her accomplishments. People like that are inspirational. My mother was fascinated.

Plan to at some point read more about her.

                Hi Beowulf,

Well, it's pleasing to see that if anything comes out of my remarks about this one interesting relative of mine results it is in people looking her up. I have to see if any of her singing (of Yiddish tunes) are on the web - especially YouTube.

You would think that someone would have reprocessed and transferred all Diana's recordings on to disc, but all I can find is the odd compilation CD with just one of her songs. There are one or two sites that offer free downloads of individual songs, but whether or not they're safe I don't know.

Some search results seem to come up in Yiddish or Hebrew, so maybe using those languages to search with might crack it.
