            Thanks

But it's all family tree stuff, just got one relo who was never born it seems. I have spent hours on ancestry looking for him.

              Hi GUT

Have you tried other sites? There is the obvious which I'm sure you are aware, 'find my past' Or why don't you try familysearch.org. Also it would be a good idea to check out the transportation details etc. If you haven't done so already.

I did find a list of transportees a few months ago, will try and find it again and give you the details etc, when I do. It gives the names of the ships they traveled in, which may be helpful

                Checked all those.

Have a book on all the transport ships, partner got it when doing her PhD on child convicts transported.

His dad arrived as a single man [believed to have come with the navy as he was a Lt] all the siblings are registered, one three times, but can't find this one anywhere. Found everyone else's baptism, [one by Druitt's uncle] but not him.

We can even place where he was in the order of children by various press reports and family materials. Ie in '52 family mentioned as having 5 children by '55 7 children.

And then as they marry and die etc most are mentioned as oldest son, 2nd daughter, 7th child and that sort of thing, so we peg him down pretty soundly.

My partner made a note once that he was born in '53 [and we're pretty sure that's spot on] but do you think we can find where she got it from, not on your sweet nelly.

And as for how his dad got here! Family lore says he came with the Navy [bringing convicts] liked what he saw, so back to England and hitched a ride [probably working his passage]. But can we find just what ship? We know he was in England in '38 as he is mentioned in promotion lists and he got married in Australia in 1841 so it's not a big range to search, but he in not mentioned on any ship that arrived in that period.

                  Hi GUT

Could it be possible that he changed his name? Maybe he registered himself under another name. After all I'm sure there would be a list of all the passengers on board, for the Australian officials to look at.

Or could it be possible that he was constantly trekking back and forth from Australia, England etc?

Also what makes you think he was born here? Have you looked at the Irish (most of those files haven't survived) Scottish, Welsh or perhaps the rest of Europe?

                    Doesn't seem that way.

We have his father in Dorset. And his baptism in Dorset.

Kids born in Australia roughly every two years from '42 to '59 him mentioned in newspapers and Parliamentary documents and business/work records.

If he wasn't a passenger but a crew member he could easily have slipped through the gaps. There doesn't appear to have been anything underhanded about it.

His father [my 3xG gf] was chaplain to a member of the Royal family and there are reports of chats in the street between him and the King, he is even mentioned in letters from the King to one of the Princesses.

He actually had a son who seems to disappear about a year after birth [presume he died young] but in spite of his father being the clergyman who baptised them all, no record of burial, maybe dad was so so distraught he simply didn't write it in. The next son is gven the same name, which I think supports the first one dieing.

Then the son [my 2xG gf], when he arrives in Australia works as a teacher and then in various government departments, is invited to various functions held by the Governor, so all seems above board, just it would be nice to know exactly when he arrived and on what boat.

Then we just can't confirm exactly when his son [my Great gf] was born.

So you can see why I don't get too worked up when we can't find records about someone.

                      Hi GUT

I hate to say this but, could it be possible that he was the black sheep of the family?

Are you looking for census records? How do they work over there?

What about religion? Could it be possible he was born out of wedlock? Did he have the same parent(s)?

                        G'day Natasha

Yep we have Great Grandfather from about 1860 up to death in 1929, it is simply the birth we don't have. And according to all the records yep same parents as the other 8 kids. Just no registration of birth or baptism that we can find. Now at one stage there was a fire at the archives so that may be the explanation, just as I know a lot was lost in England during the War. We have the actual reference for my 4xG G'f will, but it has been confirmed that the will itself was lost during a bombing raid.

GG Grandfather again same parents, have him pretty solid from baptism Sept 1809 in Dorset to about 1838 [promoted to LT RN] then again pretty much every six months or so in Australia between marriage in 1841 to death in Aug 1865.

It's really only those two issues.

Plus why wasn't GG/G/f brother's death [presumed] entered into the Church register

As you say info destroyed may well have contained the answers.

What about New Zealand registers, paperwork etc? Have you checked them out? May seem a long shot, but you never know.

Actually mght have found him arriving in Australia. It actually looks promising, if just two documents had first names and not just Mr in one and initials in the other.
