There are entire TV channels in Asia devoted solely to competitive eating. Over there, it is seen as a serious sport rather than an amusement.
Indeed, Japanese competitors won the 4th of July hot dog eating contest in New York for several years in the 90's and 2000's, sparking a crisis for American competitive eaters who had not been taking it seriously as a discipline. Joey Chestnut was one of the new wave of American competitive eaters who basically took the Asian approach.

I'm embarrassed to say that I watched the entire hour long program culminating in the hot dog eating contest. It is done very much tongue in cheek and really tacky. Yet it is all done in fun (except for the actual hot dog eating) and so over the top that they have almost turned it into an art form.
