  • RIP Dennis Law

I couldn't let the passing of an iconic footballer go without a mention.

I used to work with a chap who saw both Law and Best in a match in which they would dribble pass some opposition players and then they would deliberately play the ball so they could dribble pass them again, "just for jolly". I don't they would be allowed to do that in today's game!

A sad loss. My Dad always used to say what a great player he was.

As a young boy I went to three Manchester United games in the late 1960s but sadly Denis Law was injured and unable to play on each occasion. By then the hard pitches and even harder tackles were catching up with him. A truly great player of his time who would have been even greater now with the enhanced facilities and protections provided.

It is often said that great goal scorers are selfish. Probably true but there was also a refreshing honesty and humility about Denis Law. As former team-mate Brian Kidd recalled, ''He said to me, 'if you're ever wide, don't look up, put the cross in early. If I'm not there, it's my fault.' He was usually there. Sir Matt loved him. We all did. He was the King of the Stretford End.''

For those interested in the UK who didn't catch it at the time, there was a nice little tribute to the Lawman at the start of last night's Match of the Day.
