I’ve been staying in Eastbourne for a few days and got my first reminder of the case with this sign (photographed from a train) It’s the company of solicitors founded by Wynne Baxter of course.

On a day trip to Tunbridge Wells today there was a van that almost ran someone over near a zebra crossing. It had McCarthy written on the side which I thought was a mild coincidence. Then, on the way to The Pantiles I saw this and thought bloody hell, it’s everywhere!

Walking through The Pantiles I got a phone call from an old friend that I hadn’t heard from all year called Anne. At the time I was standing near a hair salon called Chapman!!

On the way back to Eastbourne we changed trains at St. Leonard’s. Crossing the bridge to the correct platform I saw this.

If I’d have seen an undertakers called Anderson and Macnaghten next I’d have been suspicious that some conspiracy was afoot. No more ripper stuff for the day then? Not quite….

Back at the hotel I picked up one of the 2 books that I’d brought with me. A poetry collection by Charlotte Mew as recommended by Frank Skinner. The next poem was called Madeleine In Church. In the second stanza:

”But Monty took it hard. All said and done I liked him best,-
He was the first, he stands out clearer than the rest.
It seems too funny all we other rips
    Should have immortal souls;”

    Maybe I’ll try some Dickens?

    Regards

    Sir Herlock Sholmes.

Just goes to show how a series of chance events can portray a sense of intelligent design. Pierre would've loved this!

Well spotted. The "s" in "Leonards" is possessive, apply that to the name, and we get "Leonard's Matters", clearly a clue to read between the lines of his book.

I didn’t think of that. It’s all coming together now Martyn/Al.The place that I’m staying is next to Cambridge Road and who went to Cambridge University? JK Stephen and Prince Eddy the Ripper and those pesky Apostles of course! And….I’ve just noticed on the wall of my room is a naval scene but it’s in the form of a POSTCARD! Get it? And I have to say that the soap dish looks a bit kidney shaped to me too. There’s bound to be more.

I just remembered. Last Tuesday I went to Hastings and who had a shop in George Street, Hastings plus other residencies there? George Chapman.

And I bet the postcard picture contain an indeterminate white blob that if one squints at it it looks vaguely like a gull?

You reminded me! Numerous gulls have landed on the ledge outside my window.

Well, if one of them craps on you when you're out for a morning stroll, you've solved it!!

I hope your hotel's not serving devilled kidneys.

They aren’t as far as I know Ms D, but perhaps if I gave the signal.

Scream three times, but not very loudly?

Beware of buying grapes on the street, and always say your prayers.
