I am certainly sympathetic to this woman especially since I was a waiter at one point in my life (although not a gay one. Not that there is anything wrong with it. My nod to Seinfeld). It was the worst job I ever had and that includes pouring cement in Florida in the middle of summer. I know what jerks people can be.
On the other hand, I am starting to think these people (and there was a prior similar incident) might be working a scam.
