    A terribly feeble answer ! ( you've frustrated me, Mike )

Why would Jim insure the book for £7, 000 (in the 1980s), when he had previously judged the book to be worth nothing ? Tell Me.

Why would Jim have tried to sell the story to the papers and Neville think that it was worth at least £20,000 quid, now ?

Why are there so many books published on the Ripper, all promising to offer ' The Final Solution' ? ( which I think was published in 1977, sparking off a whole new interest).

Wouldn't a genuine airtight 'closed case' on the Ripper spark off lots of new books and film ?

Didn't Lechmere's (the Poster) 'Event' last year trend globally on MSN ( with little publicity) ?

How many people go on Ripper tours each night ?

The Public do 'care' to know the name of Jack the Ripper. It is worth a great deal of money.

Just because someone has Parkinson's doesn't mean they can't hold something. It is a progressive disease that can span years. Perhaps by the end of the disease it might be impossible, but there are many stages of Parkinson's, so to use a photo of DSS holding something as proof is not a valid argument.

I wouldn't buy it. If someone gave it to me, I'd read it and give it to the library. My point is that it wasn't and isn't worth the money a person would have gotten out of it to fake anything. No way. No how. The only things that would be worth a lot of money in the Ripper world would be the actual weapons used, a photo of Kelly, and records proving the identity of JTR. The weapons would
make a lot of money because there are enough sick people out there that would want them. The other things still wouldn't be worth that much comoared to say, a lost Poe poem.

Tell me the name of one person who has gotten wealthy off the JTR saga? Tours bring in a certain amount of money every night...kind of like a coffee shop does. There isn't a huge lump sum of money going to anyone for such a book. For my intentions, let's list a huge lump sum at over 250,000 dollars.

          • Here's another rum thing ( I'll come back to you Mike)

In the News of the World unpublished story (supposed to be from 1981) which turned up, Jim Swanson tells of finding the Anderson book containing the marginalia and states clearly that the book was published in 1905.

He then goes on to say " As my Grandfather worked under Sir Robert, and was involved in numerous cases, he was pleased to receive a signed copy" .

That clearly leads us to understand that the copy was signed by Anderson -although we know that it was offered as a gift by Fred.

However, in 1987, in a letter to the Telegraph following the Nevin story appearing, Jim writes "my Father wrote the notes in 1910, when he was 62 years old". Jim only ascribes annotations to 1910, since he knows that that was the publication date of the book.

But by 2000, when Evans & Skinner see the book, there is a letter from Anderson, dated 1905, and offering an unspecified book as a gift, glued over the front page and hiding Fred's name.

Skinner and Wood try to pass this off as a 'genuine mistake' 'he must have got confused over the publication date'. (this would suppose that Jim was 'confused' in 1981, not confused in 1987, and confused again in 2000). They excitedly point to the NoTW story as proof that Jim had had the letter in 1981, and was genuinely well meaning.

However, for me, it points to the NoTW story being forged at the same time as the letter was glued in (so between visits by Begg and then Evans). The passage in the story about the book being signed by Anderson in 1905, is only an attempt to pass off the LSOMOL as being a personal gift from Anderson to DSS. So raising DSS's importance, and increasing the value of the book.

                • value of book

This book would not be valuable to the average man in the street how ever in the hands of a newspaper it would be worth millions. How many people would buy a newspaper with a headline claiming to have solved the world's most famous unsolved case every body knows the name "jack the ripper" .Of course for a newspaper to do this they would have to have some evidence the book it self would be evidence enough so we have to ask why didn't they buy it.I seem to remember the Times not wanting to get involved in the "ripper diary" over concerns it couldn't be proven genuine

Just a reminder that this question is still just hanging out there, unanswered, unaddressed, etc.

Please. There have been approximately TEN headlines of someone claiming they have solved Jack the Ripper in the last ten years. It's boy who cried wolf at this point. We've even had best-selling published authors put forth their "Solved it!" And by and large the world has met this information with a big fat yawn. People in this field seem to think that because we find the case endlessly fascinating that everyone else must likewise find it fascinating.

In my general life, attempting to explain how Stephen and I met, I frequently have asked "Have you ever heard of Jack the Ripper". I think in that time ONE! one person has said, er, a killer of some sort, but they could no more name who and the details than any other. And that recognition was AFTER the Johnny Depp movie came out.

The public at large really does not care as much as you'd think about an unsolved mystery from 125 years ago. They are far more fascinated with the mysteries occurring now, like Madeline McCann, Amanda Knox, Casey Anthony, etc.

People ask why there is some "attempt" to devalue the marginalia. It's not an attempt to devalue it, it's to give you perspective on what the broader world actually considers its value.

Go up and down the street and ask your neighbor would you be willing to pay 20, 000 pounds to buy the notes from an obscure police officer that you've never heard of, who states he knows the name of a man that another police officer you've never heard of thought was jack the ripper.

See how many people take you up on that offer.

You forgot thieving as well. It's so very interesting that when the truth, backed up by facts, is told about people such as that, it's "personal abuse" but when they go out accusing people of wrongdoing and can't even be arsed to drum up a shred of logical support or reasoned basis for their accusations, that's just "attempts to find the truth". Double standards. I find them so interesting.
