PS. Been threatened with personal harm you say? That's novel. On a JTR website linked private message board?....that's..err... slightly more than creepy...
Phil
Creepy, because it makes you think, Christ, does he know where I live? But I wasn't the only one to be so threatened. Empty threat maybe, but a threat all the same. Nothing ever came of these threats, it goes without saying.

Hell Graham,
Sorry to read of this. Must have been quite un-nerving for you.
You weren't the only one you say?.. my God, a "serial" threatener on a web-site about a supposed "serial" killer...yup..that's creepy alright!
Glad to hear the threats were empty and all is well.

The original line was what Tecs put down, but I also heard the bowdlerized one about horses (not dead horses - I altered it some more). As for graphite - I'm stumped about using that at all. You're right that today pencils use graphite, but they used to use lead.

Hello Jeff,
From Ye olde Wikipedia..
"The distinctively square English pencils continued to be made with sticks cut from natural graphite into the 1860s."
Graphite has been used since the 1500's, apparently...
However, if you are referring to the paint on the outside of the pencil...
"Although lead has not been used for writing since antiquity, lead poisoning from pencils was not uncommon. Until the middle of the 20th century the paint used for the outer coating could contain high concentrations of lead, and this could be ingested when the pencil was sucked or chewed"
Thanks for the explination. In one of my former lives before 1500 I must have used a lot of pre-graphite pencils (though I wonder how I could afford them). Since I have the bad habit of biting down on my pencils while thinking (and - of course - writing) the high lead content on the outside explains some odd personality quirks.
But I still can't figure out how to use "graphite" in a joke.
Phil Carters posts are one of the reasons no one posts anymore.
Lame veiled attacks on the 'old guard' and cheap jibes off 'inner sanctum'.
As Rob Clack states, too many put up half arsed theories and ill conceived ideas which do not stand the test of reason and fact.
Over 10 years ago these boards were full of brilliant minds. I did not agree with all of them but they knew how to present a case. However about five years ago a wave has entered screaming conspiracy and 'I know someone in the met who says it was the Queen who did it' whilst, at the same time, declaring the rest of us have been duped. Yet provide NO evidence whatsoever.
They just talked.
So, rather than end up in futile debates, and receiving ridicule akin to Mr Carters posts above, these brilliant minds left, leaving idiots like me trying to put forward common sense and research as proof.
Now we are leaving. No biggie. Debate has moved to social network sites anyway. Yep, even the dinosaurs can tweet now.

My life, there's even aggro on a thread supposedly intended to debate why there's aggro on the threads and why people don't seem to be posting as much as they used to. Personally, my feelings are that with a case such as Jack The Ripper there is a core, albeit small, of hard facts, and an enormous enveloping pulp of speculation. And it seems to me that parts of that enveloping pulp are going rotten. For Chrissake, Vincent van Frigging Gogh? On the other hand, I believe that debate concerning, say, Druitt, is always worthwhile, providing that it doesn't go off the rails as such debates are prone to doing these days. The 'Diary', too, is worthwhile, but again providing that people are willing and able to discuss it in a civilised manner, and not just dismiss it out of hand as a piece of nonsense scribbled down in a Liverpool terrace around 1990. Personally, I was never much of a mainstream Ripperologist, for the simple and doubtless simplistic reason that I don't think the identity of Jack The Ripper will ever be established beyond all doubt; however, there are peripheries of the case that certainly do interest me.
I think Phil Carter does have a valid point with regard to an 'inner circle' - if he does care to name names, then that's up to him, but I for one am fairly sure of who he means - and no, I won't name names either.
For a number of years I contributed to a once-serious Forum dedicated to the local history of where I live - it was enjoyable, friendly and quite educational. Then the originator of the Forum died, and it was taken over by an admin that right away laid down very stringent rules with regard to what could be posted. Within about three months the Forum became almost the exclusive domain of a most definite 'inner circle', and if you weren't in it, your posts were ignored. So I just stopped posting, as did many others. The forum's still there, but it's got just like bloody Facebook. I do sometimes feel that the Casebook Forum is in some danger of going the same way, and I'd hate to see that happen. Nothing to do with dinosaurs...more to do, I think, with gents like me, of somewhat advanced years, who first took an interest in Jack The Ripper when Daniel Farson's book was published (1959?) and can't frankly see much going for van Gogh, Lewis Carroll and the rest of 'em.
Some time back, in a jocular vein I posted that in my opinion Sir W S Gilbert was a bloody good candidate for the Ripper, as he didn't like women and was given to wandering the London streets at night. Would you believe I got two PM's seriously asking for further details regarding my theory???
Oh bugger it, it's Friday night, I've just scoffed a plate of home-made chili pork and noodles, and I think I'll have a little drinkie....
Keep friendly.

The funny thing is, there is no cabal or inner sanctum. Yet Phil is in his own little cabal with others who are hell bent on spreading there conspiracy nonsense and dragging these boards back into the dark ages where they have steadily been going for the past five or so years.
Phil infers that there is a cabal at work who are supressing the truth, surely this group must be outed.
So come on, who are they?
Monty
I'm not suggesting, and never said, and I don't think Phil did either, that there is a cabal which is suppressing the truth - whatever that truth might be. The truth of what, actually? All I was was saying was that there is something of a clique on these boards that habitually resists any criticism or even debate of their theories and ideas. I will under no circumstances name names, as these should already be familiar to anyone who is a regular visitor here. Plus, I'd probably get my arse banned full stop, and not just from the A6 Forum, and I do quite like it here.
