  • Boris for PM again?

I have just heard on the news that Boris' supporters are claiming to have the required 100 votes for him to stand in the forthcoming election of the new PM.

This is almost beyond belief as he was forced to resign by his party just a few weeks ago as being unfit to govern. He then recommended that the Conservative electorate choose Liz Truss as his successor!

As far as I can tell, this must mean that either -

    1. He believed that her policies were just what Britain needed, in which case he is surely a brainless oaf with no idea of the basics of economics, and totally unfit for any leading post in politics, or
    2. He realised that Liz Truss would trash the economy in days, but accepted that probability, recommending her to party members, either to gain revenge by keeping Rishi Sunak out, or to give himself the opportunity to return quickly, hence the parting "hasta la vista, baby" as he quit PM's questions for the last time. Either of these would mean putting his own interests before those of his country.

Either way he is surely someone unsuitable to lead us.

Am I missing something? Is my logic faulty?

you are missing the complete and utter stupidity of the Tories. To hell with that lot. They're really just trolling the country now.

Let them elect Johnson again. By december, the standards committee will have released their report that Johnson has misled parliament and he will have to resign again. We will then have a fourth PM in 2022. Total clown car. Red noses and floppy shoes everywhere.

He may or may not have 100 supporters but at the minute it’s half that that’s came out and said they would vote for him. Johnson’s camp is running a campaign telling people they have 100 to generate votes, Tories are like sheep.
Just 15 weeks ago he resigned in disgrace when his party resigned to force him out. Many of them the same people are cheerleading him now. If this does not show what a bunch of hypocritical power grabbing scum most of the Tories are nothing will.

If Johnson gets into the last 2 with Sunak, Sunak hasn’t a chance.

Is Boris being put up to run as PM for tactical reasons?

I have no idea. Just a thought.

Thanks for all your observations - Boris is clearly not popular here! Yes, his team may be overstating his potential votes, yes, he still has to satisfy the parliamentary committee that he didn't mislead the House of Commons, and yes, we cannot discount the possibility of some tactical manoeuvre here. But it was his recommendation of Liz Truss that concerned me most.

Did he realise her proposals would trash the economy so quickly? If he didn't, he was surely incompetent, and if he did realise, then surely he was putting his own interests first, before those of his country. This was my big concern.

Boris has often put his own interests first before those of his country.

There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.

ok, so the (hopefully) final end to Johnson's PM career pretty much sums up what this man always was.

First of all, he is still an elected MP but goes on holiday during a massive crisis engulfing the country but cuts it short the second he thinks he has a sniff at regaining his job.

so he flies back, talks to his supporters, claims to have met 100 threshold and THEN says he has come to the realisation that this is not the right thing to do?

                  REALLY?

                  spoiler-alert: no, not really.

Bye bye, Boris. don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Cue Jacob Rees-Mogg later this morning on the radio to state that this has been an INCREDIBLY honourable thing to do and that the party should unite behind Boris, no matter who the new PM is going to be...

Well, we can close this thread as Boris is not standing for PM - I think we may assume that the claim of 100 votes was not true, or possibly Sunak said he wouldn't work with him if Boris won. Anyway, thread dead.

Johnson pulled out. It’s a first for him.

let's keep it open for now. The conservative parliamentarians have acquired a taste for PM blood and they're getting better, more efficient and more resourceful at it every time. Although Rishi Sunak does not strike me as someone who would embroil himself in scandals or deal in shambles...

Sunak was also involved in "partygate" of course.

well, at least the parties were not in his house and he never stood up in parliament to declare

                              1. There were no parties at my house.
                              2. I have been assured there were no parties at my house.
                              3. There were parties at my house but I wasn't at them.
                              4. I was at the parties at my house but I didn't know they were parties.
                              5. They were work events.
                              6. I truly apologise and I have learned my lessons.

The other problem is of course that I will now be entering a severe mid-life crisis after I have just found out that the current leader of the Conservative party is younger than I am....
